Bender Fortress stands on the banks of the Dniester. Its citadel houses two museums in very different locations: one in a former Turkish powder magazine and the other in the basement of an octagonal tower. Together with the city's museums, churches and Alexander Nevsky Park, they form a cultural hub whose themes range from fortress history and regional nature to the railway.

Fortress and Citadel on the Dniester

The Fortress History Museum is housed in the citadel's former Turkish powder magazine. The Torture Museum is located on the lower floor of the northeastern octagonal tower; it was established there in 2012. Each museum's setting has a specific connection to the complex. If you are interested in the fortress, you can take in these different locations as well as its position on the Dniester.

Regional History, Metal and the Railway

The Bender History and Local Lore Museum is devoted to the region's nature and history in a comprehensive exhibition. Its main exhibition comprises 13 halls. The collection includes a dugout canoe from the first half of the 15th century, found on the banks of the Dniester near Bender. This brings a broad overview of regional topics together with a single find whose date is precisely established.

The “History Frozen in Metal” museum complex is located in Bender's central square. It presents forged metal compositions on historical themes, arranged chronologically. The material and chronological sequence form the central thread here, setting the complex apart from the local history museum's wide-ranging exhibition on nature and history.

The Bender Railway Workers' Glory Museum opened in 1977 and is housed in two railway carriages on the station forecourt. It documents the development of the Bender railway junction over a period of more than 130 years. The exhibition's focus is thus clearly limited to the city's railway history. If you are choosing museums by subject, this one focuses on a single mode of transport and its long history.

Churches and Memorial Sites

Bender's Transfiguration Cathedral is a 19th-century architectural monument and has been under state protection since 1948. It was built in the cross-domed style characteristic of Orthodox churches. At Bender Fortress, the Alexander Nevsky Church was consecrated in 1833 in the presence of Emperor Nicholas I. The church and a bust of Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky are located in Alexander Nevsky Park at the fortress.

Bender's Military History Memorial Complex includes an Alley of Generals, where the remains of ten Russian military leaders are buried. This memorial site adds another clearly defined historical focus to the churches and museums. The cathedral, Alexander Nevsky Church and Alley of Generals represent different aspects of the city's history: architecture, a consecration with a specific date, and military commemoration.

Park, Leisure and a Beer Tour

The “Carousel Yard” amusement park is located in the southern part of Alexander Nevsky Park, within Bender Fortress. It offers five rides, areas for board games and a compressed-air shooting range. Since June 10, 2026, the park has been open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Check the hours before your visit to make sure the dated schedule fits your plans.

A beer tour is also among the experiences on offer in Bender. The brewery is described as Transnistria's first brewery. During the tour, visitors can see the brewery and sample three varieties of unfiltered “Staraya Krepost” beer. The beers are brewed according to traditional Soviet-era recipes. Ask about booking arrangements in advance. Alongside museums, architecture and memorial sites, this is another option, offering a look inside the brewery and a tasting.
