The Museo de Arte Sacro de Yucatán offers a tangible way to connect with Conkal’s regional cultural heritage. The museum is located in part of the former San Francisco de Asís Franciscan convent and presents a significant part of the region’s historical and cultural heritage. In Conkal, it is listed as a tourist center of the state of Yucatán.

Former Convent and Museum

The former convent dates back to the 17th century. It was restored in 2000 and 2001 and established as a museum of sacred art in the state. The Museo de Arte Sacro opened to the public on March 24, 2001, after almost four years of renovation and restoration work. The dates form a clear sequence: the historic convent was followed by restoration and use as a museum.

A Collection Spanning Different Eras

The collection includes models of churches and former convents from Mocochá and Conkal, as well as one of the pre-Hispanic burials discovered during archaeological investigations in the area around the temple of Conkal. It also includes colonial ceramics, pre-Hispanic Maya vessels, an old wooden roller used to draw water from a well, and old blue-dyed Franciscan garments.

One particularly clear contrast in eras is between colonial ceramics and pre-Hispanic Maya vessels. The wooden roller broadens the focus beyond sacred art to include drawing water from a well, while the Franciscan garments keep the collection’s connection to the order in view. The collection thus encompasses different types of objects and historical associations, rather than focusing solely on church architecture.

Historic Routes on the Map

An interactive game offers a different perspective: on a map of Yucatán, visitors can calculate how long Franciscan friars once took to travel between monasteries and churches during the viceregal period. While the collection comprises tangible models and objects, the game draws attention to historic routes and how long they took. The museum therefore brings together two distinct ways of exploring the past: examining material objects and interactively engaging with historical travel times.

A Dated Festival

On September 29, 2025, patron saint festivities in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi began in Conkal. The traditional ceremony included felling and planting a ceiba tree. This date adds a specific celebration in honor of the saint to the town’s cultural significance.

Weighing Conkal as a Place to Stay

When choosing where to stay, you can weigh these cultural themes against your own travel interests. If you’re interested in sacred art, the history of a Franciscan convent, and a varied collection of historical objects, Conkal offers a clear point of interest. When looking for a hotel in Conkal, this cultural focus may be one reason to consider the town. If you’re planning a museum visit, please check the current opening hours in advance.
