Ursulo Galván connects the history of the municipal seat with a major archaeological site in the municipality: during the Postclassic period, Cempoala was an important center of the Totonacs. Cempoala is within the municipality; the history of San Carlos de Chachalacas concerns the present-day municipal seat. The Museo de Sitio de Cempoala is also nearby. This gives you several starting points for planning your trip: the history of a Totonac settlement, archaeological structures, museum exhibits, and the development of the present-day place name.

Cempoala: A Totonac Center

During the Postclassic period, from 900 to 1521 AD, Cempoala was one of the most important Totonac settlements. It was the capital and the main political, administrative, and religious center of the Totonacs. This context gives the buildings and artifacts a broader significance: Cempoala can be explored not only through individual temples, but also through its role as a political and religious center. For travelers interested in archaeological history, this is a distinctive highlight within the municipality.

Temples and Water Engineering

Cempoala’s buildings include the Temple of Quetzalcóatl, the Main Temple, and the round Temple of the Wind God Ehécatl. Other structures include the Templo de las Chimeneas and the Structure of the Caritas. The latter has two levels and is decorated with stucco skulls. Their names and features give each building its own architectural point of reference, rather than presenting them as a single, uniform group.

The water system also adds to our understanding of the settlement: Cempoala had a hydraulic network that carried water from the Río Actopan, also known as the Río Chachalacas, into the city. This broadens the focus beyond temples and religious significance to include the settlement’s infrastructure. The archaeological structures and water network thus represent different aspects of Cempoala’s history.

The Museo de Sitio de Cempoala

In four permanent exhibition rooms, the museum displays archaeological objects including ceramics, stone and bone artifacts, stucco, fragments of murals, clay figures, depictions of deities associated with the cult of the dead, and architectural elements from Cempoala. The collection also includes remains of walls, figures, statues of people and animals, and everyday objects. Together, these collections range from structural remains and wall decoration to objects from daily life.

The museum offers workshops and guided tours for school groups by prior written request. Museum admission is included in the admission fee for the archaeological zone. Before your visit, check whether this admission arrangement is still in effect. This lets you plan the museum as a distinct part of your archaeological experience, without conflating the exhibits with the temple structures at the site.

The History of Ursulo Galván

San Carlos de Chachalacas is considered the historic predecessor of the present-day municipal seat. San Carlos was granted the status of a villa, and the municipal seat was named Úrsulo Galván in honor of the prominent agricultural leader from Veracruz. This local history offers another way to explore the destination: it tells the story of how the present-day name developed and complements Cempoala’s archaeological significance with the history of the municipal seat. Both topics relate to the municipality, but concern different places and historical contexts.

Fiesta de San Carlos and River Excursions

The Fiesta de San Carlos includes religious services, processions, and fireworks; the festivities also feature a fair with rides and games of chance and skill. The festival in the municipality of Úrsulo Galván is held from November 3 to 15. If you’re planning your trip around the festival, check the latest dates and program in advance.

Another activity is taking river excursions in the coastal zone, where the Río Actopan empties into the sea. Alongside archaeological and historical interests, river excursions are therefore another option. What shapes your trip depends on whether you are most interested in Totonac culture and architecture, the history of the municipal seat, the Fiesta, or an activity on the Río Actopan.
