Antón Lizardo combines weekends by the water with an excursion destination off the coast: the Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano. From here, a boat trip takes you to Isla de Enmedio; however, the park is not part of the town and has its own access rules. When planning your stay, you can distinguish between coastal life in Antón Lizardo and a separately arranged visit to the marine park.

Weekends by the Water

On weekends, residents of nearby towns come to Antón Lizardo to enjoy the sun, sea breeze and water. Typical local dishes and stews are also part of the weekend offerings. This makes time by the water and dining locally two distinct highlights. You can plan time in town as a separate part of your trip and add the boat trip to Isla de Enmedio separately.

Traces of Local History

The archaeological remains of the former military installation, Batería de Antón Lizardo, are listed as historical monuments. The Escuela Naval Militar was officially established in Antón Lizardo on January 1, 1953. The two references are different: the Batería is associated with archaeological remains, while the naval school is associated with its official establishment on a specific date.

The Reef Park off Antón Lizardo

Off Antón Lizardo lies the Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano, the largest coral reef system in the Gulf of Mexico. The park is in the town’s surrounding area, not within its boundaries. The protected area’s public-use zones include Isla de Enmedio and Cancuncito. May through August is recommended as the time to visit the park; check this seasonal recommendation with the park authority before planning your trip. The park has at least 50 diving buoys. As this number may change, check the current figure before your visit.

Plan Your Boat Trip and Access

A boat trip from Antón Lizardo takes you to Isla de Enmedio. There, you can snorkel and observe the flora and fauna. The island’s beaches have white sand, and the water is clear and turquoise. Access to the Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano is permitted only on authorized tourist boats. Visitors must hire authorized tourism service providers in Veracruz, Boca del Río or Antón Lizardo. The public-use zones can also be reached only under this access rule. Check current operating conditions before your trip.

Getting There and Planning Your Accommodation

Antón Lizardo is at the end of the road that runs from the port of Veracruz toward Córdoba and Orizaba. Immediately after crossing the bridge from Boca del Río, the access road branches off to the left.

In the second case, factor the recommended period, authorized boat access and current operating conditions into your plans before booking accommodation. This will help you align your accommodation search with the activities you actually want to combine.
