When looking for accommodation in Alonso Lázaro, the cultural and landscape features of Santiago Tuxtla Municipality can help guide your search. Tres Zapotes is known for Olmec archaeology; museums and festival traditions in Santiago Tuxtla add to the picture. These attractions are also spread across different parts of the municipality: the archaeological site is in Tres Zapotes, while several museums and festivals are located in Santiago Tuxtla. You can tailor your vacation rental search to what you want to shape your stay: archaeology, regional culture or landscapes.

Tres Zapotes: Olmec History and Archaeological Site

The Tres Zapotes archaeological site comprises three larger groups of mounds around irregular plazas and covers approximately 2 km². Tres Zapotes is an ancient Olmec site; its heyday began 37 centuries ago and ended 24 centuries ago. The first colossal Olmec stone sculpture in the form of a head was discovered there in 1862.

The Museo de Sitio de Tres Zapotes displays Estela C, considered the oldest stele in Mesoamerica. The collection also includes a Classic-period burial with grave goods, as well as pottery pieces, vessels, ear ornaments, spindle whorls and greenstone axes. The archaeological perspective thus encompasses both the site’s distinct layout and a diverse selection of museum objects.

Museums and Cultural Perspectives

Another collection is housed at the Museo Regional Tuxteco in Santiago Tuxtla. It displays archaeological artifacts from the Totonac and Olmec cultures of the Mexican Gulf Coast, including the Cabeza de Hueyapan. The collections offer different perspectives: the Museo de Sitio de Tres Zapotes displays, among other things, Estela C and finds of various kinds; the Museo Regional Tuxteco broadens the picture with artifacts from two Gulf Coast cultures.

Traditional music in Santiago Tuxtla is also part of the municipality’s cultural identity. It includes Huasteco trios featuring guitarra quinta, Jarana and violin. This musical tradition offers a different way to experience regional culture than the archaeological collections or festival days.

Festival Traditions and Dates

The Fiestas Patronales in honor of Santiago Apóstol in Santiago Tuxtla are considered the most important festival of the year. They include religious tourism, Charrería, folk traditions, handicraft exhibitions, and a cultural and entertainment program. The patron saint festival runs from July 22 to 30; the Danza de Negros y Cristiano is performed on several Sundays beforehand. If you plan to travel in the future, it is advisable to check the local program.

The Líceres festival takes place every year in June and is especially active on June 13, 24 and 29. In Santiago Tuxtla, a Mojiganga featuring the Toros de petate and the Líceres is also part of the festival tradition on July 24 at 4 p.m. The June and July dates provide two different opportunities to plan a culturally focused trip.

La Rama follows its own sequence: Rama Grande and Rama Chica begin at the Palacio Municipal with a Fandango. They are then taken to a house or business, where another Fandango takes place the following evening. The tradition continues until January 5. Its sequence therefore differs from festivals with specific dates in June and July.

Landscapes and Directions

Santiago Tuxtla Municipality lies on the foothills of the Sierra de los Tuxtlas. The Los Tuxtlas Biosphere Reserve also includes the municipality. These features complement the cultural attractions with a landscape perspective on the region.

The main access route to the Biosphere Reserve is the Veracruz–Coatzacoalcos federal highway. It passes through the municipalities of Ángel R. Cabada, Santiago Tuxtla, San Andrés Tuxtla and Catemaco. To reach the Tres Zapotes archaeological site, head from Santiago Tuxtla toward Isla; then take the turnoff to Tres Zapotes. These are two different directions for navigating the municipality and the Biosphere Reserve.
