ACCOMMODATION IN 230 COUNTRIES

For a trip to the City of Nanacamilpa, seasonal nature and historic sites sit alongside annual celebrations. In July, the forests around Hacienda Ixtafiayuca glow with the bioluminescence of millions of fireflies. The Parroquia de San José and the haciendas also shape the range of attractions. Two questions can help with planning: Would you like to time your trip to coincide with firefly season, and what type of accommodation would suit your stay?

Haciendas and Accommodation

During the special firefly season, Hacienda Ixtafiayuca accepts individual reservations for overnight stays. For most of the year, it is rented exclusively to one group at a time, offering complete privacy and a personalized experience. Seasonal individual reservations and group rentals are different ways to plan your stay. Since information from the operator and seasonal availability may change, ask about current booking options in advance.

Hacienda San Cayetano offers single and double rooms. Visitors can tour and photograph the chapel, stables, and maguey fields; access may depend on your stay. If you would like to visit these places, check in advance whether a tour is possible during your stay. The room types listed offer a clear guide, but should not be taken as equivalent to the offering at Hacienda Ixtafiayuca.

Church History and Festivals

The Parroquia de San José was founded in 1581. It stands on the site of a former hacienda chapel that was under the direction of Juan Villerías. The parish church was restored in 1959. It is considered one of the 16th-century architectural and religious landmarks in the state of Tlaxcala. Its founding year, predecessor building, and restoration mark different chapters in its history.

Día Grande Nanacamilpa is celebrated every year on November 23. Another annual tradition is the Feria del Pulque: the main square hosts an exhibition on pulque culture and its derivatives. During the fair, various exhibitions take place in front of the municipal government offices. Visitors can find natural and cured pulque there, as well as products from businesses in the municipality. If you would like to plan your trip around the fair, check the specific event dates in advance.

Nearby Places

Ex Hacienda San Cayetano, a 19th-century hacienda, lies 6.5 kilometers northwest of Nanacamilpa. Access is via an unpaved road. The Monumento El Águila stands halfway along the road between Nanacamilpa and Miguel Lira y Ortega. These details help locate both nearby destinations without specifying a particular travel time.

Fireflies and Nature in the Municipality

Santuario de las Luciérnagas is located in the forests of Nanacamilpa and is a protected area where fireflies can be observed. It lies in a mountain ecosystem consisting mainly of oyamel fir, pine, and oak forests. Visits are regulated: to protect the natural environment, visitors must not use lights or camera flashes, and must not make noise. Ecotourism activities offered there include hiking, camping, and guided tours; check activities and conditions again before your trip.

In the municipality, some visitors combine firefly watching with guided tours where they learn about the region’s edible mushrooms. These tours often include tastings and mushroom-preparation workshops. Confirm the availability of individual tours in advance. To reach the Santuario, road routes lead from Mexico City via the México–Pachuca highway and Apan, from Puebla via the México–Puebla highway and Tlaxcala, and from Hidalgo via the Apan–Calpulalpan road. Check road conditions and signage before setting out.
