Five named bodies of water make up the Cenotes de Aldama system. Other notable natural and cultural attractions include a waterfall on the Río Carrizal, opportunities for birdwatching and sport fishing, and a regional museum. For planning, it helps to choose a main focus first and keep the respective access routes in mind.
Cenotes and their different dimensions
The Cenotes de Aldama system includes El Zacatón, Baños, Murciélagos, Poza Verde, and Alameda. El Zacatón is an open cenote approximately 140 meters in diameter and 335 meters deep. Poza Verde is 150 meters in diameter and approximately 200 meters deep. These measurements give the two sites distinctly different profiles.
Distinctive formations have also been described at La Pilita and La Azufrosa: La Pilita is 30 meters in diameter, with an explored depth of approximately 100 meters. La Azufrosa is 12 meters in diameter and has a cone-shaped bottom. Alongside the large, deep bodies of water, there are also smaller formations with their own distinctive shapes.
If you are considering visiting a cenote, factor access into your plans: the cenotes are on private property, and a group is responsible for monitoring the area. So check in advance whether a visit is possible rather than assuming access is unrestricted.
Museum, waterfall, and activities on the water
The Museo Regional de Arqueología e Historia is owned by the municipal government and opened on May 6, 2000. Its exhibits include a historical collection and archaeological pieces from the region. The museum offers a cultural complement to the natural attractions and may interest travelers who also want to learn about the area's history.
El Salto is a waterfall on the Río Carrizal, where swimming and rappelling are possible. At Playa del Sol in the town of Barra del Tordo, you can go birdwatching or sport fishing. For a different view of the water, Barra de Morón offers boat trips and nature experiences.
The timing of the work at Playa del Sol is also specified: in March 2025, the municipality of Aldama began repair work there. The aim was to welcome visitors during the holidays under improved conditions. This is a dated phase in the development of the site and should not be confused with a statement about current conditions.
Routes and accommodation planning
Route details vary by destination. The Cenotes de Aldama can be reached via the municipality of Las Palmas; from there, the drive northeast takes 20 to 30 minutes. Playa Barra del Tordo is listed as 42 kilometers from the municipal seat of Aldama, with an approximate driving time of 40 minutes. Actual travel time may depend on conditions.
Access to Playa Rancho Nuevo from Aldama involves 25 kilometers of paved road and 18 kilometers of unpaved road. Since road conditions can change, it is advisable to check the route before setting out. Consider the information for each destination separately: it describes different routes and does not automatically add up to a single round trip.
When looking for a vacation rental or accommodation, use the destinations that matter most to you as your starting point. Cenotes, coast, waterfall, and museum offer different experiences; the distances and travel times listed can help you factor these outings into your plans.
