Sonora combines striking desert geology with archaeological and historic sites. In the El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve, volcanic formations and dunes take center stage; in Trincheras, a museum and a terraced hill tell the story of the Trincheras tradition. Other highlights include the historic townscape of Álamos, rock art near Caborca, and the cultural stops along the Ruta Sierra Mar. These varied attractions give you a basis for planning your trip around your interests.
Volcanic Landscape at El Pinacate
The El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve encompasses the dormant volcanic area of Pinacate, with black and red lava flows, as well as the dunes of the Gran Altar Desert. These can reach heights of up to 200 meters. The reserve also includes ten enormous, deep, almost perfectly circular craters. Two interpretive trails add to this geological highlight: one is in El Elegante Crater, and the other is at Cono Mayo.
Trincheras: Museum and Terraced Hill
Another highlight is Trincheras. The Museo de Sitio de Trincheras provides information about the Trincheras tradition, its way of life, activities, and environment through exhibits and interpretive materials. The exhibits include archaeological pottery, stone tools, shell objects, and other remains recovered during investigations in the area.
Cerro de Trincheras offers another perspective on the archaeological site: the modified hill has more than 900 terraces. At its summit is Plaza del Caracol, with a spiral-shaped structure; this area was restricted and used for ritual purposes. The museum focuses on finds and materials, while the more than 900 terraces shape the form of Cerro de Trincheras. The address of Cerro de Trincheras is Boulevard Joaquín Murrieta and Calle Sonora s/n in Trincheras, Municipio de Trincheras, Sonora.
Town History and Rock Art
In the historic town of Álamos, Plaza de Armas lies at the center. The large open space is landscaped with gardens and trees. The historic monuments area in Álamos comprises 70 city blocks with 188 buildings dating from the 17th to the 19th century.
Near Caborca, the La Proveedora archaeological zone showcases the rock art heritage of the Sonoran Desert. It complements the archaeological themes of Trincheras with a different focus: rather than museum objects and terraces, the emphasis here is on rock art.
Ruta Sierra Mar and Bacanora
The Ruta Sierra Mar passes through the municipalities of Navojoa, Álamos, Etchojoa, and Huatabampo and offers cultural, ecotourism, and adventure activities. The stops mentioned include different Bacanora experiences: at Rancho Nidopa in Mazatán, visitors can sample traditional products and the typical drink Bacanora. At Rancho Real del Álamo, visitors can stop to see how Bacanora is made. A tasting and a look at the production process are two different ways to explore the drink.
