Punta Allen, also locally known as Javier Rojo Gómez, is a fishing village in the heart of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Tourist activities in the village include nature and water experiences. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish the village’s offerings from the landscapes and habitats found across the wider protected area.

The Village and the Sian Ka’an Landscape

Across the wider protected area, the landscape is shaped by tropical forests, palms, savannas, extensive mangrove areas, sandy beaches, and dunes. The marine area covers more than 120,000 hectares and protects a valuable part of the Mesoamerican Reef System, as well as seagrass beds in shallow bays.

The regional landscape also includes cenotes, natural pools filled with water, and petenes: forested islands rising above wetlands. Both are connected by underground freshwater systems. Sian Ka’an also provides habitat for jaguars, pumas, ocelots, Central American tapirs, resident and migratory bird species, manatees, sea turtles, and numerous fish species. This diversity describes the protected area as a whole, while tourist activities in Punta Allen have their own focus.

Boat Trips, Wildlife Watching, and Reefs

Tourist offerings in Punta Allen include boat trips and excursions through mangroves and lagoons. Dolphin, sea turtle, and bird watching is also offered; sightings may naturally vary. Reef snorkeling is another activity, although conditions and availability may vary. Sport fishing, including fly fishing, rounds out the range of activities.

The offerings differ mainly in their focus: wildlife watching centers on animals, reef snorkeling on the underwater world, and sport fishing on angling. Boat trips and journeys through mangroves and lagoons focus on other aquatic and landscape environments. This makes it possible to choose activities based on your interests without treating them all as the same kind of excursion.

Fishing and Nature Experiences

Local cooperatives are the main providers of tourist activities. Their members include former fishers who use their boats and knowledge to offer nature experiences. Fishing is therefore not only part of the village’s history, but also shapes how many tourist activities are organized.

For more than 30 years, the VigĂa Chico fishing cooperative in the municipality of Punta Allen was the largest producer of spiny lobster Panulirus argus in the state of Quintana Roo. It was described as an example of sustainable artisanal fishing. The cooperative is also described as an artisanal fishery that coexists with marine conservation. This historical significance adds a local connection to fishing to the nature experiences.

Getting There, Accommodation, and Local Cuisine

Punta Allen is reached via the Caseta Arco Maya; from there, the route continues along 50 kilometers of unpaved road. As road conditions can vary, factor this stretch into your travel plans and check the latest conditions before setting out.

The village has a small selection of rustic accommodations. Dining options for visitors are also limited and are based on local fishing and fresh seafood. This brings two practical questions together when planning: which nature and water activities interest you, and whether suitable accommodation is available.
