Concá brings together cultural details and distinctive natural places: the Jardín Etnobiológico Concá helps preserve and share the biocultural diversity of the Sierra Gorda and is located on the Concá campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro. Other highlights include a mission with plant-inspired façade motifs, a very old sabino tree and the pools of El Abanico. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: focus on cultural design and regional diversity, or on the natural pools and their surroundings.

Cultural and Natural Perspectives

Pames artisans worked plant motifs into the façade of the Misión de Concá. This draws attention to a specific design feature and the craftsmanship behind it. Compared with the Jardín Etnobiológico’s regional focus, the Misión offers a concrete architectural reference. The term “biocultural” connects biological diversity with cultural knowledge. In this way, a specific façade design and a regional thematic framework sit side by side.

The Árbol Milenario adds a single natural landmark to this regional focus. A sabino, also known as an ahuehuete, stands in Concá and is approximately 1,200 years old. The two nature-related themes differ in scale: the tree is defined by its species and approximate age, while the Jardín focuses on its mission to support the biocultural diversity of the Sierra Gorda.

Water Landscape and Location

Nacimiento El Abanico is a natural pool surrounded by vegetation, with clear water suitable for swimming. El Abanico has turquoise pools fed by streams that flow directly down from the hills. The vegetation includes oaks, pines, white cedars, nogalillos and firs. Local water conditions can vary seasonally; if water levels are important to your plans, take this variation into account when choosing when to travel.

El Abanico is located in the municipality of Salitrillo in Concá, Arroyo Seco, at kilometer 32 of Highway 69 between Jalpan and Río Verde. This places the natural site along a specific road reference and between two named landmarks. The Río Ayutla is also nearby. Its turquoise, crystal-clear water, rock formations and natural pools provide a distinct natural highlight alongside El Abanico. While streams and vegetation shape the natural setting at El Abanico, the rock formations stand out as an additional feature of the Río Ayutla.
