Santos Reyes Nopala is located in the Costa region of the state of Oaxaca. Chatina traditions, archaeological evidence, and a municipal seat surrounded by mountains give the town a distinctive character. The cultural connections and the landscape between the valley and the mountains are of particular interest when choosing a destination.
Chatina Culture and Historical Traces
Archaeological pieces attributed to the Chatina culture and dating from the Classic period, from 500 to 700 CE, are preserved in the Palacio Municipal. These include anthropomorphic monoliths. In addition, twelve stelae are set into the walls of the Palacio Municipal. Settlement in Santos Reyes Nopala dates back to approximately 800 BCE; the town reached its greatest flourishing between 500 and 700 CE. These dates provide a historical context for the evidence associated with the Chatina culture.
Traces of an earlier, prosperous city have also been studied in the Santos Reyes Nopala area: stone buildings, pyramids, ball courts, and other areas. The archaeological remains have not yet been fully excavated. Casa de Cultura Casa del Pueblo is a cultural center in Santos Reyes Nopala. Together with the archaeological connections, it shows how closely the town’s cultural profile is linked to its history.
Festivals, Music, and Local Traditions
The Jarabe del Guajolote originated in Santos Reyes Nopala and is part of the cultural context of the Fiesta de Reyes. This annual town fair honoring the Three Kings is associated with the period from January 5 to 7. Traditional elements include regional dances, fireworks, and a castillo. At a 2024 cultural presentation of Boda Chatina and Torna Boda, sones and chilenas were performed.
Another tradition is the MayordomĂa procession: giant marmotas, or Monos de Calenda, parade through Santos Reyes Nopala with a band. Sones and chilenas are danced along the way, before the procession ends at the church. The Plaza Grande is associated with DĂa de Muertos on October 31. People from nearby towns then come to the community to sell products for decorating altars. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festive periods, check the exact dates and program in advance.
Coffee and Handicrafts
Coffee is also part of the municipality’s economic history. The 2008–2010 municipal development plan described coffee production as the main agricultural activity and cited 2,800 hectares and 500 producers. These figures refer to that period. The artisanal processing of coffee into ground coffee is considered a process of interest to tourists.
The municipality also has small craft workshops of various kinds, where most of the workers are women. Coffee production and crafts represent different aspects of local work: agricultural cultivation and processing on the one hand, and various artisanal activities on the other. Both contribute to the community’s cultural and economic character.
Valley, Mountains, and Getting Your Bearings
The municipal seat lies in a small valley at the foot of Cerro del Atole and is surrounded by mountains. Cerro de la Iglesia lies to the north, Cerro del Pajarito to the east, Cerro Travieso to the southeast, and Cerro del Atole to the west. In the northern part of the municipality, the Sierra Madre del Sur continues; there are coffee plantations and pine-oak forests there.
The waterways also provide precise regional context: the municipality is part of hydrological region RH 21, Costa de Oaxaca, and the C RĂo Colotepec y Otros watershed. The RĂo del MaĂz runs along the edge of Nopala. The RĂo La Neblina runs in the direction of the road to Cerro del Aire.
A description of the road connection to Nopala published in 2015 mentions Federal Highway 135 toward Puerto Escondido, followed by a right turn onto an unpaved road near San Gabriel Mixtepec. Since this guidance is older and road conditions can change, check the route before you travel.
