San Miguel del Puerto offers several ways to enjoy a nature and culture trip: a described tour to waterfalls, a national park with interpretive trails, and historical and craft traditions. When planning, it is worth distinguishing whether the tour is currently available from the other nature and culture topics.

Jungle Tour Cascadas: Waterfall, Coffee, and Jungle

The Jungle Tour Cascadas takes visitors by quad bike or vehicle through small communities and into the jungle, as far as the Llano Grande waterfalls in the municipality of San Miguel del Puerto. A 2017 description also mentions a visit to Finca la Gloria, where participants learn about coffee cultivation and processing, as well as observations of flora and fauna, a swim in the waterfalls, and a traditional Oaxacan meal. These different elements make the tour a nature and culture experience in its own right. Before planning, check whether it is currently offered.

National Park with Different Forest Types

Parque Nacional Ricardo Flores MagĂłn extends across the municipalities of San Miguel del Puerto and Santa MarĂa Huatulco and covers 1,812 hectares. It was established by decree on August 15, 2023. The park protects diverse flora and fauna. Its forest types include tropical lowland deciduous forest and medium and low subdeciduous forest. Visitors can hike along interpretive trails and explore the area.

Other Nature Destinations

A municipal development plan for 2011–2013 lists Cascadas Las Brisas de Granadillo, Pozas de Llano Grande, Aguas Termales de la Merced, Playa Mojón, Playa Gamito, Playa Bocana de Copalita, and Puente Las Hamacas as ecotourism destinations in San Miguel del Puerto. The plan also mentions forests in the municipality as places for outings or walks. It describes the Río Copalita within the municipality as suitable for high-risk water sports. If you are considering such activities, check current conditions and possible providers in advance. A travel article from February 2026 links Cascadas Mágicas de Copalitilla with San Miguel del Puerto and describes them as a nature destination with crystal-clear water and tropical vegetation. Before setting out for destinations listed in the older plan, check current access arrangements.

History, Crafts, and a Feast Day

According to traditional accounts, San Miguel del Puerto was founded in 1533 by Spanish and Zapotec settlers. May 8 is associated with San Miguel Arcángel (apparition) in the town; the program may vary from year to year. The making of comales and pots is also part of the local character: they are produced in the municipality.

Getting to the Waterfall Area

A state report dated September 9, 2023 describes a route connecting the municipal seat of San Miguel del Puerto with the waterfall area; 10 million pesos had been earmarked for paving it with hydraulic concrete. If you are planning a trip there, check current road conditions.
