San Miguel Amatlán offers several distinct discoveries: the Museo del Origen de los Pueblos Mancomunados focuses on the early history of settlement and territorial traditions, while the former La Soledad mine brings mining history to life. There are also historic trails, seasonal activities, regional cuisine, and cabins and camping facilities at Centro Ecoturístico Yagaa-Tzi.

Codex, Mine, and Hacienda

The Museo del Origen de los Pueblos Mancomunados tells the story of the first settlers of Yagaa-Tzi. Among its notable exhibits are a facsimile copy of a codex and a map sketch from 1615. Both record the boundaries of the territory of the Pueblos Mancomunados. At the museum, you can encounter both the history of the early settlers and a concrete depiction of the territory.

The former La Soledad mine includes a 200-meter-long underground section. The ore veins from which minerals were extracted are visible there. Access through Tunnel No. 3, which dates to 1910, is possible with a guide. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether a guided tour is available for your date.

Another historic site is Hacienda El Socorro. Its bridge, built in 1827, leads to the remains of a temple dated to 1909 and the cemetery of a community that has since disappeared. The mine, museum, and hacienda offer different ways to explore the area's history: through an early document, visible traces of mining, and the remains of a former community.

Trails and Activities

In San Miguel Amatlán, you can ride a mountain biking route along historic trails beside the river. The remains of nearby mining haciendas can also be explored on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback. This gives you several ways to get around while exploring historic sites; the mountain biking route along the river is a separate offering.

Depending on the season, Centro Ecoturístico Yagaa-Tzi offers night walks to observe different bat species. This activity is explicitly seasonal. If bat watching is an important part of your plans, ask about dates before your trip.

Regional Cuisine and Accommodation

San Miguel Amatlán has two eateries: one privately run and one community-run. Both serve regional cuisine; seasonal dishes made with local ingredients include bean broth and Mexican-style mushrooms. The menu therefore follows seasonal ingredients rather than promising a set daily selection.

For overnight stays, Centro Ecoturístico Yagaa-Tzi has six cabins with a total capacity of 34 people. The camping areas can accommodate an additional 30 people. The center also has a fire pit, rents out bicycles, horses, and tents, and provides certified local guides for activities. Its offerings also include traditional treatments such as temazcal, limpias, and massages, as well as culinary workshops.

The cabins and camping areas provide different options for staying on site; the capacity figures help you gauge the scale of these options. Check current availability before booking, and confirm what is being offered on your dates for guided tours, seasonal walks, rentals, treatments, and workshops.
