Mexico City brings together archaeological sites, museums, an expansive parkland and the canals of Xochimilco. In the Historic Center, you can combine a walking tour of the Templo Mayor, Catedral Metropolitana and Palacio Nacional; the Bosque de Chapultepec offers a different perspective, with its four sections and lakes. Xochimilco adds trajinera rides, nature conservation and regional cuisine to the mix. When planning your trip, it helps to first choose the experiences you want to shape your stay.

Historic Center and Museums

The Historic Center of Mexico City is recognized as a World Heritage Site. A walking tour connects the remains of the Templo Mayor with the Catedral Metropolitana and Palacio Nacional. The monumental complex of the Templo Mayor is an extraordinary testament to the cults of a vanished civilization. The tour therefore brings together archaeological traces and two other notable buildings in the Historic Center.

The Museo Nacional de Antropología houses the Piedra del Sol, the sculpture of Coatlicue and a replica of Pakal’s tomb. The museum is accessible by metro via Auditorio station on Line 7 and Chapultepec station on Line 1, as well as by Metrobús via Antropología station on Line 7. Check transport connections before your trip, as transport information may change.

Other museums offer different areas of focus: The Museo Frida Kahlo, also known as the Casa Azul, offers a glimpse into Frida Kahlo’s personal world through her brushes, original easel, iconic dresses and collection of folk art. The Papalote Museo del Niño offers workshops on topics such as nature, biology, civic education and creativity. The collections and workshop themes give you different starting points for choosing museum visits based on your interests.

Parkland in the Bosque de Chapultepec

The Bosque de Chapultepec is the largest urban park on the American continent and is divided into four sections. The Second Section is home to Lago Mayor and Lago Menor; both are suitable for boat rides and taking in the restored landscape. CablebĂşs Line 3 connects the four sections. Check current operating information before your trip.

Architecture of Castillo de Chapultepec

Castillo de Chapultepec is considered the only royal castle on the American continent. Its surviving features include elevated gardens, European stained-glass windows and period interiors. These architectural details offer a distinct focus alongside the museums’ collections and the landscape of the Bosque.

Xochimilco: Landscape, Canals and Cuisine

The lake landscape of Xochimilco preserves the only reminder of the traditional settlement of the lagoons in the Basin of Mexico before the Spanish conquest. At Xochimilco’s docks, trajinera rides are offered through the old canals of the chinampa communities. The landscape and canal rides thus provide two different ways to experience this place.

The Parque Ecológico de Xochimilco is a refuge for endemic flora and fauna; its conservation work focuses on the axolotl. Another side of Xochimilco, shaped by local legend, is the Isla de las Muñecas: According to legend, hundreds of dolls hang from the trees there.

The cuisine is also a good reason to visit. The Mercado de Xochimilco is a central place to try tamales de charal, tlapique and mixiotes. Markets in Xochimilco also offer flowers and food. Vendors and selections may vary, so it is worth checking what is currently available when visiting a market.
