Los Reyes de Salgado combines historic buildings and recurring festivals with a nature excursion nearby. The religious buildings and festival events are in the city, while Los Chorros del Varal is an excursion destination outside the town. If you plan your trip around a specific date, you can make urban cultural activities and a nature excursion different focuses of your itinerary.

Historic Architecture and Culture

The Parroquia de los Santos Reyes is designated as a historic architectural monument in Los Reyes de Salgado. Another example of the town’s architectural history is the Capilla de San Gabriel: it dates from the 16th century, and its dome is painted with religious motifs. The two religious buildings offer different points of interest if you are interested in the town’s architecture and history.

The Casa de la Cultura is also part of the city’s cultural history. It was founded in 1995 as a joint program of the local and state governments to promote and disseminate cultural activities. Past workshops there included painting, dance, photography, English, PurĂ©pecha and ceramics. The subjects therefore range from artistic activities to language and crafts.

Another landmark is the “Los Reyes 400” Obelisk, next to which stands a monument to General JosĂ© Trinidad Salgado RenterĂa. The fountain at the obelisk was put back into operation in January 2022 for residents and visitors entering the city through this access point. This historical information describes its reopening at the time, not its current operating status.

Festivals with Different Focuses

Every year on May 12, a handicrafts fair is held in the main square to mark the anniversary of the town’s founding. A description from 2022 mentions public demonstrations of basic sugarcane-processing methods as part of the fair. The date thus combines a fixed annual occasion with insights into the production of sugarcane products.

The traditional Día de Muertos program includes competitions for altars and graves at the Cobaem site in Los Reyes, as well as events in the main square. The Marcha de las Ánimas and competitions for paintings, literary calaveras, Catrinas and Catrines are also part of the program. The procession travels along Calle 16 de Septiembre to the main square. If you plan to travel specifically for a festival, check the date of the event in advance.

The Caravana de la Fantasía is another annual event. It is organized by the José Francisco Trinidad Salgado preschool. The municipal family services department then holds a festival with various activities for children. The individual program items are a reason to plan your trip around the festival you want to attend, rather than treating all the events as a single occasion.

Los Chorros del Varal Nearby

For a nature excursion, Los Chorros del Varal is located near Los Reyes de Salgado. The protected natural area includes several waterfalls about 40 meters high, fed by water emerging from an underground river. From the viewpoint, you can see the surrounding vegetation and birds in flight. Visitors can descend to the river and waterfall area.

The route crosses a suspension bridge to a viewpoint and includes about 800 steps. Since access conditions can change, check the current trail conditions before your visit. The waterfalls and descent offer a different focus from the city’s buildings and events, so plan your visit as a separate excursion without assuming a specific travel time.

Local Cuisine and Getting Around the City

In the municipality of Los Reyes, morisqueta is known as steamed rice served with beans fried or cooked in broth, tomato and chili sauce, and cheese or pork. Chorreadas, bollos and rosquillas are also among the municipality’s local baked goods. These specialties belong to the municipality of Los Reyes; they are not specifically associated with any one neighborhood.

Los Reyes de Salgado’s urban transport is served by private minibus lines, known as combis, on several routes. Routes and operating conditions may change. If you plan to use this transport within the city, ask about the current route that suits you.
