Los Azufres combines thermal waters with distinctive mountain scenery: springs, steam, and healing mud are part of the landscape, along with lakes and dense coniferous forests. When planning your visit, the question is not just which pool or activity interests you. Hiking trails, different thermal bathing facilities, and the drive from Morelia all offer different points of focus. You can decide whether warm water should define your stay or whether you also want to set aside time for the scenery and outdoor activities.
Thermal Waters and Scenery
Los Azufres lies on Cerro de San Andrés, in a landscape with a dormant volcano, lakes, and dense coniferous forests. Steam, springs, healing mud, and thermal waters are also part of the natural scenery. Among the main attractions are boiling mud craters, which are said to have properties for cosmetic facial and skin treatments. Los Azufres also has trails through pine and oak groves. This gives you different options for planning your day: thermal waters and pools on the one hand, nature and hiking on the other. You can consider which should shape your trip without treating the forest trails merely as an add-on to a day of bathing.
Thermal Baths and Activities at Rancho Viejo
The Rancho Viejo Los Azufres Ecotourism Center has a thermal bath and is set in a mountain landscape. Camp Rancho Viejo Los Azufres offers hiking; Rancho Viejo is located within an Área Voluntaria para la Conservación (AVC) certified by the government of Michoacán. The Rancho Viejo Los Azufres Tourist Center also has a zip line. These different options can help you plan your stay around your interests, from thermal bathing to outdoor activities. If you plan to use the zip line, check whether it is operating at the time of your visit.
Pools and Accommodation at Laguna Larga
Centro Turístico Laguna Larga has seven pools, including two recreational pools and one therapeutic pool. This breakdown gives you a specific point of reference if you want to include different bathing options in your day’s plans. Camp Laguna Larga offers cabins and a camping area. You can choose between these two types of accommodation; check current availability if you plan to stay in one of them. Manantial San Alejo is across the road from Camp Laguna Larga. The water at the spring is over 50°C, and there are pools there too. This lets you distinguish the named spring and its temperature from the information about the seven pools at Centro Turístico.
Getting There from Morelia
One route from Morelia follows the Morelia–Maravatío highway for 81 kilometers to Jeráhuaro; there, at kilometer 22, turn toward Ciudad Hidalgo. Alternatively, take the western highway. At kilometer 187 on the Morelia–Ucareo–Jeráhuaro section, head toward Ciudad Hidalgo; from there, it is another 22 kilometers to Los Azufres. The two routes refer to different road sections and landmarks. Keep them separate when planning your drive if you want to combine it with a visit to the thermal facilities or forest trails.
Food Between Outings
Restaurante del Bosque combines traditional flavors with fresh cuisine, making it a good fit for a day spent enjoying thermal waters and nature. When planning your day, you can consider a meal break as its own part of the itinerary alongside bathing options and outdoor activities.
