Naucalpan can be explored through tangible traces of different eras: Tlatilca finds, pre-Hispanic trade history, religious heritage, and 20th-century architecture sit alongside Parque Naucalli and cultural venues. When planning your trip, the first question is therefore which side of the destination you want to focus on: archaeological history, striking buildings, or a combination of parks and culture.

Archaeological traces and pre-Hispanic history

The Museo Tlatilca in Naucalpan has a collection of 187 objects from the Tlatilca culture, dating from 1200 to 750 BCE. Another point of interest is the El Conde archaeological site in the center of Naucalpan de JuĂĄrez. It was a tecpan, or noble palace, where community decisions were made. Together, these sites reveal different aspects of history: material evidence of a culture and a place whose function was tied to community life.

The Pochteca Monument near the historic center commemorates the long-distance merchants of pre-Hispanic times. They connected Mesoamerican communities through trade and diplomacy. The legacy of the Pochteca is therefore about more than goods—it also reflects exchange between communities. Within the municipality of Naucalpan, Cerro de Moctezuma preserves remains of the Tlatilca culture from 1200 to 500 BCE and the Mexica civilization from 1325 to 1521 CE. These include pottery, figurines, and the remains of ceremonial structures.

Buildings between memory and modernity

The Torres de SatĂ©lite make a striking architectural statement: Luis BarragĂĄn and Mathias Goeritz designed the towers, which were inaugurated in the first days of March 1958. The Fuente del Tlacuilo is on a very different scale. Luis Yaotl AragĂłn created this monumental sculpture from pink and gray stone between 1973 and 1975. It weighs 1,000 tons and is dedicated to the ancient Nahua scribes. Their designs and dedications make these two works distinct starting points for exploring Naucalpan’s architecture and cultural memory.

The Parroquia San BartolomĂ© ApĂłstol is also among the area’s historic buildings. It is located in the heart of San Bartolo in Naucalpan and was built on traces of Indigenous settlement dating from the 16th to 17th centuries. The Arco de San Lorenzo Totolinga marks the entrance to one of Naucalpan’s Indigenous places of origin. Both structures thus point to a history that can be understood not only through archaeological finds, but also through places and the meanings passed down about them.

Religious heritage and cultural venues

The BasĂlica de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios was founded in 1575 within the municipality of Naucalpan. It preserves an old wooden carving of the Virgin of Los Remedios. Religious artworks for visitors include a large bronze crucifix and the exhibition in the Apostles’ Hall. Visitors can view the image up close in a prayer room. The religious heritage here brings together the historic founding date, works of art, and a specific place of worship.

The 43-hectare Parque Naucalli is home to the Centro de Cultura Ágora, a venue dedicated to promoting art and culture in Naucalpan. The park and cultural center offer two different points of interest for planning a visit: a large green space and a venue expressly devoted to culture. If you are also interested in traditional sports and event venues, Naucalpan is home to Arena Naucalpan, a venue for Lucha Libre that opened in 1977. The Lienzo Charro Manuel Ávila Camacho is a venue for practicing and preserving Charrería.

Planning tips

The Ruta TurĂstica de la Identidad Naucalpense brings together 50 attractions on a two-day route. If you plan to include this route in your stay, check the latest municipal route details beforehand, as they may be revised. Another point of reference is the tourist walkway along Avenida Benito JuĂĄrez, an urban connection in central Naucalpan that is suitable for walking tours. You can shape your itinerary around whether archaeological history, architecture, religious heritage, or cultural and event venues are your main focus.
