El Oro brings together several perspectives: mining can be explored through collections and historic work equipment, while a former railway station tells the story of the railway. There is also an eclectic Palacio Municipal, a local drink tradition and opportunities for outdoor activities. When planning your visit, you can first decide whether culture and history or activity and scenery should take center stage.

Mining: collections and local evidence

El Oro’s Museo de la Minería contains 250 minerals, just over 200 objects and five permanent exhibition rooms. The objects include photographs, plans and tools. Machinery and equipment used to extract minerals add another perspective on mining work. The different pieces offer a range of points of interest: minerals are displayed alongside work tools and the images and documents associated with mining.

The Socavón San Juan is also dedicated to mining heritage. Along its accessible section, visitors can see mining tools, documents and mineral samples; a statue honors the miners. This distinguishes the site from the museum’s collection: here, the exhibits are displayed along a section of the mine. Check the current admission conditions before visiting.

Railway history and architecture

The former railway station now houses the Museo del Ferrocarril El Oro. It contains photographs and tools used at the station during the railway era. The site adds the history of the railway to the mining perspective, while the two collections cover different subjects: the Museo de la Minería focuses on minerals and extraction equipment, whereas the railway museum presents photographic and practical evidence of former railway operations.

For a different perspective on architectural history, visit the Palacio Municipal de El Oro. Its facade is eclectic in design, while the interior is furnished in the Art Nouveau style. The contrast between the exterior and interior makes the building a distinct architectural attraction alongside the museums. Check the current opening hours and admission conditions for each venue before planning a visit.

La Chiva and finding your way around the center

La Chiva is El Oro’s signature drink: an emerald-green beverage made by hand from anise and herbs for more than 100 years. This tradition offers a distinct way to experience local culture and differs markedly from the museums’ historical subjects. If you would like to try or buy La Chiva, ask locally about current availability.

Plaza Gastronómica y Artesanal serves as a landmark in the town center. It is located at the corner of Avenida del Ferrocarril and Ángela Peralta in El Oro, Mexico, postal code 50600. Use the stated corner as a reference point when finding your way around the center.

Cycling route, zip line and scenery

For an activity along a former railway line, the Ciclopista Vías Verdes uses eight kilometers of disused railway track. It connects the municipal seat with the municipality of El Mogote. As the condition of the route may change, check the latest information before using it. Parque Ecoturístico El Mogote has a 200-meter-long zip line over a gorge more than 80 meters deep. This is a different kind of activity from the cycling route; check locally in advance whether the zip line is currently operating.

The protected landscape and seasonal natural features can also be considered separately. Presa Brockman, together with Presa Victoria, is part of a 1,564-hectare Santuario del Agua y Forestal, designated on October 13, 2004. El Mogote waterfall is a few minutes from the municipal seat and is visible only during the rainy season. Its visibility therefore depends on the season, while the Presas are described here in terms of their joint protected-area designation.

When choosing accommodation, use the themes of your stay as a guide: mining and railway history, architecture and local traditions, or outdoor activities. Check the current conditions at the places you actually plan to visit in advance, and tailor your search to the main focus of your trip.
