La Cruz de Loreto can be explored through three specific themes: sea turtles, coastal and wetland landscapes, and local history. The Santuario Playa Mismaloya and the waterside landscapes shape the view of nature; the Templo de San Juan de la Cruz and the town’s development add a cultural focus. When choosing a vacation rental, consider which of these themes you want to shape your trip most.

Coast and Wetlands

Olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea), green turtles (Chelonia mydas), and leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) nest and lay eggs at the Santuario Playa Mismaloya. The protected Playa Mismaloya coast is located in the village of Cruz de Loreto. Historically, the area was considered one of Mexico’s most important sites for solitary egg-laying and mass arrivals of olive ridley turtles.

Punta Las Peñitas is a 7.2-kilometer-long sandy beach bordered by saltwater areas and tropical dry forest. At Punta Peñitas, the tides form small pools on a rock formation. They provide habitat for various mollusks and numerous marine algae. The coast therefore offers more than one type of beach: sand, rock pools, and adjacent habitats are among the area’s described natural features.

Nearby, the Agua Dulce–El Ermitaño wetland system lies alongside Playón de Mismaloya. It consists of Laguna Agua Dulce and Estero El Ermitaño, which are connected by a regulated channel. Tropical dry forest, mangroves, wetland vegetation, and coastal dunes meet around Laguna Agua Dulce. Those interested in waterside landscapes will find diverse habitats here that differ from the tidal pools along the coast.

Conservation, History, and Culture

Nature conservation and sea turtles are also part of the town’s history. La Cruz de Loreto developed during the 1960s and 1970s based on the use of sea turtles at Playón de Mismaloya and in the sea. Fishing is also part of the local use of the wetland system: the Sociedad Cooperativa de Producción Pesquera La Cruz de Loreto S.C.L. has approximately 60 members and continues to use the fishing resources of the Agua Dulce–El Ermitaño system.

The Templo de San Juan de la Cruz is located in La Cruz de Loreto. Every year on November 24, people from nearby communities gather there to celebrate their patron saint. The date links a visit to the religious heritage with a local tradition; if you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the dates in advance.

Low-impact tourism and non-extractive activities take place at the Santuario Playa Mismaloya. These activities are subject to the protected area’s rules and permits. CONANP oversees nature conservation and preservation measures there, the management of sea turtles and their nesting areas, as well as surveillance, monitoring, cultural activities, and environmental education. Before planning an activity at the Santuario, check which rules and permits apply.

Getting There and Getting Around

The main access points to the Agua Dulce–El Ermitaño Ramsar site are via La Cruz de Loreto, followed by unpaved roads and paths. One route description gives a distance of 7.83 kilometers for the state highway that passes through Nuevo Santiago and reaches La Cruz de Loreto. As road conditions can change, check the condition of unpaved roads before setting out.

The area around La Cruz de Loreto is rural and expansive; exploring on foot or by private vehicle is recommended. A rental car or local taxi services are suggested for getting to Punta Las Peñitas, as public transport is limited. Transport conditions can change, so it is worth checking the current situation in advance. November through April is listed as the dry season in La Cruz de Loreto; during these months, it is warmer and there is less rain.

If you’re looking for a vacation rental in La Cruz de Loreto, let your priorities guide your choice of destination: turtle conservation and wetlands, coastal landscapes, or local history and tradition.
