Its location on the open sea and its classification within the terrestrial influence zone of Santuario Playa Mismaloya give Ipala two distinct points of reference: the beach in the town and the broader protected-area context. When planning your trip, it is useful to keep these scales separate. The coastal information describes specific stretches of beach, while the protected-area information covers a broader land and sea zone.

Coast and Surfing in Ipala

Ipala Beach stretches for about 5 km along the open sea. Surfing is possible there with appropriate caution; conditions vary by season. If you plan to surf, check the seasonal conditions in advance.

Ipala in the Influence Zone of the Sanctuary

The place boundary used in December 2023 classifies Ipala as a rural settlement within the terrestrial influence zone of Santuario Playa Mismaloya. The influence zone specified for the 2025 management plan covers 111,844.785012 ha and consists of a terrestrial polygon and a marine polygon. This area figure refers to the entire influence zone, not to Ipala Beach. The beach therefore refers to the coastal stretch by the town; the influence zone covers the broader land and sea area.

Villa del Mar 1 off Ipala

Off Ipala lies the Villa del Mar 1 subzone, a predominantly sandy beach 60 to 100 m wide. A sandbar there connects Estero La Boquita to the sea. Unlike the length given for Ipala Beach, the figure for Villa del Mar 1 describes its width; the connection between the estuary and the sea is also explicitly identified.

Villa del Mar 2 and Access to Playa Chapis

In the wider regional area lies the Villa del Mar 2 subzone: a predominantly sandy beach about 4.8 km long that extends to the access point to the place known as Playa Chapis. It lies north of Santuario Playa Mismaloya. At the southern end of the subzone, there is a footpath access to Playa Chapis, located on a slope with a watercourse that flows intermittently. For orientation, keep two points separate: the approximate length refers to Villa del Mar 2, while the footpath access is at its southern end. Physical conditions can change; check them before making a specific visit.

The approximate lengths of the beaches at Ipala and Villa del Mar 2 are similar: about 5 km compared with about 4.8 km. Villa del Mar 1, by contrast, is described by its width of 60 to 100 m. The comparison is useful because length and width express different aspects of the coastline.

Sea Turtles in the Protected Area

Santuario Playa Mismaloya also has nesting and egg-laying sites for three sea turtle species: the olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), and the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). These nesting and egg-laying sites are part of the protected area as a whole. This means the sanctuary’s natural significance extends beyond the beach types described above.
