Acaxochitlán brings together nature trails, reservoirs, and local culture. Excursions offer different focuses: forest trails foreground activity and scenery, while the dams offer walks and views. Museums, crafts, and regional cuisine provide additional topics for planning your trip. This way, you can decide which experiences you want to shape your stay.

Forest Trails, Reservoirs, and Views

Las Vueltas is a forest trail about two kilometers long that formerly served as a royal road. At the Cascadas de Chimalapa, a footpath runs alongside the waterfalls, where visitors can hear birds and see the regional flora. Both trails offer access to nature, but each has a different focus: Las Vueltas connects the forest landscape with its former historical function, while at Chimalapa, birdsong and plants are part of the described experience.

Presa Omiltemetl is also suitable for walking. The dam and the Llano are considered recommended viewpoints because of their beauty and accessibility. At Presa de Santa Ana Tzacuala, translucent expanses of water and long walks are part of the landscape. The surroundings are wooded; they also have two restaurants and a small park with grassy areas and barbecue grills.

Excursions Between Forest and Water

At Presa del Tejocotal, rides in colorful boats are available. You can also go horseback riding among the forest trees. This means different activities take center stage at the same reservoir: rides on the water and exploring the forest.

Cascada de Salto de San Francisco is in Acaxochitlán, near the Cascadas de Chimalapa. It is approximately 30 meters high. Sendero Mágico de los Duendes is a theme park surrounded by lush vegetation, including pine, fir, and oak trees. It features 110 depictions of goblins in total. The waterfall, footpath, and theme park offer different reasons to explore the landscape and the area's distinctive places.

Museum, Crafts, and Regional Cuisine

The Museo Arqueológico de Acaxochitlán is located in the Palacio Municipal building and has a collection of approximately 800 objects. In the village of Santa Catarina, women embroider Quechquemitls and blouses as part of their Indigenous dress. The museum and crafts thus offer different insights into the town's history and cultural traditions.

Molotes are one of Acaxochitlán's typical dishes and can be enjoyed year-round. Fruit wines include varieties made from Acachul, apple, plum, Capulín, and blackberry. They can be purchased at the apple fair or from local factories; if you plan to visit a factory specifically, confirm availability in advance. Seasonal wild mushrooms are also part of the local food culture: during the rainy season, Nanakateras, or women mushroom gatherers, sell edible mushrooms at the Sunday tianguis in Acaxochitlán.
