Irapuato is known as the “Strawberry Capital” and is also an important agricultural and commercial center. For travelers, strawberries are more than just part of the city’s name: they are also the focus of a tour of the growing fields and activities at the Feria de las Fresas. There are also cultural attractions in the historic center and green paths in Parque Irekua.
Strawberry Fields, Tour and Fair
The Circuito de la Fresa begins in the historic center with a ride on the FRESIBUS, a panoramic transport service. The tour visits the city’s strawberry fields, where growing and harvesting are presented. It also includes the option to take freshly picked strawberries directly from the field. This outing focuses on the journey from cultivation to harvest.
A meal at a centrally located restaurant is available as an option. Main courses, drinks and desserts there are enhanced with strawberries. The Feria de las Fresas offers a different focus: artistic, cultural and gastronomic activities centered on strawberries. If you choose the fair as the main reason for your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.
Culture in the Historic Center
The Museo Salvador Almaraz is housed in an 18th-century mansion. It has two permanent exhibition rooms: the Sala de ArqueologĂa del Occidente and the Sala de Armas. Their names indicate different subject areas, from archaeology to weapons. Sculptures in the Plaza de los Fundadores commemorate the city’s origins. The area around the Templo de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is also a place to visit in the historic center.
Another architectural landmark is the Catedral de Irapuato: its present-day building was constructed in the 18th century and has a Baroque portal. Murals highlight other historical themes. The Mural de “Los OrĂgenes” explores the encounter between cultures after the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in 1547; an ancient lake appears in it as a symbol of Indigenous roots. The Mural de las Revoluciones depicts the conquest, evangelization, the Mexican War of Independence, the Reform War and the Revolution. While the museum and cathedral are connected with rooms and architecture, the murals tell history through themes and symbols.
Green Paths and a Special Activity
Parque Irekua offers a nature-focused counterpoint to the historical attractions. You can walk or run along its tree-lined paths. The park is also home to a small nature refuge where more than 65 bird species live. A visit to the park therefore combines two different interests: exercise on the paths and the diversity of its birdlife.
Another option is the ZoolĂłgico de Irapuato, also known as ZooIra. Visitors can fish in its lake. A fee-based permit is required and can be paid for at the ZooIra offices or at the ticket counter. So if you choose this activity, be sure to include the permit in your plans.
If you mainly want to learn about strawberry cultivation, the Circuito de la Fresa combines a FRESIBUS ride with a visit to the fields; the Feria, by contrast, focuses on artistic, cultural and gastronomic activities. Those interested in history can visit the museum, cathedral, plaza and murals, each offering a different perspective. Parque Irekua rounds out the options with paths and a nature refuge.
