General Cepeda can be explored through several historical and paleontological themes: from its protected historic center and the collections of the Museo de Historia Atlahuaco to the Rincón Colorado site in the municipality. Tourist packages also showcase different aspects of the area—from local history to cheesemaking and paleontology.
A protected historic center and its history
The historic center of General Cepeda is designated as a protected zone. It covers 525,596.09 m² and extends across 36 city blocks. A decree published in the state official gazette on April 2, 2014, designates the area as protected. The center is therefore a clearly defined part of the town’s history, while the history of a single building provides another point of reference.
The Molino Colorado in the municipal seat was built in 1586 as a grain mill on the country’s largest estate. It later belonged to the Sánchez Navarro family. These two aspects—its early function as a mill and its later association with the family—give the building a specific historical context, without reducing the history of the entire town to this single point of reference.
Collections with different focuses
The paleontological collection of the Museo de Historia Atlahuaco includes coprolites, ammonites, seeds, fruits, dinosaur bones, tree trunks, and palms. Its scope therefore ranges from coprolites and fossils to plant materials. Dinosaurs are not the only focus for visitors exploring the collection; the other items listed are also part of it.
Other collections have their own distinct focus. The archaeological collection includes arrowheads, mortars, and petroglyphs. The Revolution collection features cartridge belts, rifles, cannonballs and pistol bullets, pistols, as well as so-called frenos pateños. Archaeological objects and items related to the Revolution can therefore be viewed as distinct themes within the museum.
The collection on social life includes irons, agricultural tools, jaras, a sewing machine, cutlery, chests, and keys. It also includes weights and measures, cameras, radios, and a film projector. The historical photographs, in turn, depict figures from the Revolution, notable people, and buildings; images of ghosts from local legends are also part of the collection. Together, these collections offer different perspectives on objects, images, and themes in the history of the town.
Paleontology in the municipality
Rincón Colorado is another paleontological point of interest in the municipality of General Cepeda. It is Mexico’s first paleontological site to be developed for public visitation. Rincón Colorado is in the municipality, not in the municipal seat itself. This geographic distinction is useful when placing information about the site and the collections at the Museo de Historia Atlahuaco in context.
Visits included in tourist packages
The 2025 tourism portfolio lists several tourist packages for General Cepeda. One includes a visit to a cheese dairy, where visitors are shown how cuajada, fresh cheese, ball-shaped Oaxaca-style asadero cheese, and requesĂłn are made. The package then includes a tasting and the option to buy the cheese of your choice.
Another package includes a visit to the municipal government offices. The history and legends of the surrounding area are discussed, as is the importance of Francisco de Urdiñola. His connections to the founding of Saltillo, Monterrey, Cerralvo, and other places in Coahuila and Nuevo León are also among the topics.
Another package includes a visit to an on-site paleontological museum, where original fossils and the original tail of a duck-billed dinosaur are on display. Check whether the packages are currently available before making plans. This helps distinguish package visits from the collections and the RincĂłn Colorado site.
The different themes can help you choose a focus for your trip: local history, museum collections, paleontology, or a package visit offering insights into cheesemaking and local history.
