Ciudad Acuña is located in Coahuila on the Río Bravo, which marks the border between Mexico and the United States here. An international border crossing connects the city with Del Río, Texas. The waterways also provide a clear geographic reference: the Arroyo Las Vacas runs through Ciudad Acuña and flows into the Río Bravo here. This gives the area two distinct connections to water—the Río Bravo as a border river, and the Arroyo as a stream running through the city to its mouth.

Historic Sites and Museums

The Antiguo Cuartel Militar dates back to the early 20th century and is now called the Centro Cultural y Museo Militar. It is located in the heart of the Municipio Acuña and invites visitors to learn about the region’s history and culture.

In the historic center, you can visit Plaza Benjamín Canales. The Parroquia de Santa María de Guadalupe was built in 1914. Together with the Centro Cultural y Museo Militar and the Museo del Agua, these places offer different ways to explore history and culture.

The Museo del Agua opened in October 2017. As a cultural and educational center, it focuses on environmental culture and the great importance of water. The museums thus offer different thematic starting points: the Centro Cultural y Museo Militar invites visitors to learn about the region’s history and culture, while the Museo del Agua puts the environment and water at the center.

Festivals, Crafts, and Cuisine

Acuña celebrates the “Fiesta de la Amistad y de la Buena Vecindad” every year on October 24. The 2025 Fiestas de la Amistad program included the Desfile de la Amistad and the Ceremonia de Mr. Amigo 2025. The event strengthened the historical and cultural ties between Acuña and Del Río, Texas. The recurring festival day and the activities of the 2025 edition offer two different insights into the celebration’s traditions.

Typical Mexican and regional handicrafts are sold on the iconic Calle Hidalgo. Nearby, there are restaurants serving typical dishes, as well as others offering international cuisine. This brings a look at local crafts together with a choice of different cuisines, without any single specialty defining the city’s culinary character.

Water and Scenery at the Presa de la Amistad

The Presa de la Amistad is located in the Municipio Ciudad Acuña and is one of the best-known tourist destinations in northern Mexico. Water activities offered there include kayaking and swimming. These specific activities on the water complement the cultural sightseeing opportunities in the city.

The area around the Presa, with its sierras, desert, and unique landscapes, invites visitors to camp, enjoy spectacular sunsets, and relax in peaceful surroundings. Water sports and time spent in the landscape offer different planning options: kayaking and swimming focus on the water, while camping and sunsets focus on the surroundings.

Coahuila as a Broader Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Coahuila offers other attractions with a different focus. General Cepeda’s tourism offerings include paleontological expeditions and fossil workshops. In Cuatro Ciénegas, the offerings include guided tours of water pools and protected areas, as well as food tastings with a local flavor. These regional themes add to the range of options in Coahuila without equating the offerings of other places with those of Ciudad Acuña.
