When planning a trip to El Gallego, it is worth considering landscape, history and food culture as distinct areas of interest. The region’s points of interest range from a nearby mountain range to several places in the municipality of Ahumada.

Landscape between plains and mountain ranges

The Sierra Gallego near El Galleguito is one of the low, parallel mountain ranges in the municipality of Ahumada. At the municipal level, the landscape includes flat terrain, plateaus and desert areas, bordered by scattered low mountain ranges. The Villa Ahumada region is known as a vast, open desert landscape within the Chihuahuan Desert, with far-reaching views. This places low ridges and open plains side by side as two different scales of landscape.

History and culture in the municipality of Ahumada

The municipality’s cultural and historical sites include the Presidio de El Carrizal, founded in 1758. In Carrizal, the Misión de San Fernando is one of the 17th-century temples; the Capilla de Santa Gertrudis is a 19th-century chapel. The Museo Benito Juárez in Carrizal displays old documents, including letters, photographs and banknotes, as well as other objects relating to the history of the region and the country. These offer different ways to explore the past: religious buildings from different centuries and a museum with both regional and national historical connections. If you would like to visit these sites, check current visitor arrangements in advance.

Railway history and historical traditions are also part of the municipality’s story. Ahumada station was built on land that had previously belonged to the Hacienda de San José and was transferred on March 31, 1881. In Ahumada, Estación Gallego is classified as a federal railway station on the Troncal México–Ciudad Juárez railway line. Labor de Magdalena was founded in Villa Ahumada in 1874. Historically, families on ranches and haciendas in Villa Ahumada organized Jaripeos and Coleaderos to overcome isolation and provide entertainment. These events gave rise to rodeo competitions, which are still held in Texas.

Burritos and quesadillas in Villa Ahumada

For a culinary break, Villa Ahumada is known as a traditional stopping point; the town lies about halfway between Chihuahua City and Ciudad Juárez. Burritos and quesadillas take center stage. Varieties include those made with Asadero cheese, stuffed chilies and beans, as well as meat with green or red chili. Food stalls are a defining feature of this food culture. If you plan to stop at a particular stall, check its opening hours in advance.

Accommodation and getting your bearings in the region

When looking for a holiday rental in El Gallego, it helps to understand how the different places relate to one another: the nearby natural landmark is the Sierra Gallego near El Galleguito; the religious buildings and museum are in Carrizal, the railway history is in Ahumada, and the food culture and other historical connections are rooted in Villa Ahumada. Take these different points of interest into account when deciding which aspects of the municipality matter most for your stay.
