At Playa Los Barriles, you can go kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkeling, take boat trips and ride motorcycles. There are also seasonal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing, as well as excursions to the surrounding area. If you are looking for accommodation, first consider whether beach days and water sports or tours of the surrounding area will be the main focus of your trip.

Beach, wind and water activities

Playa Los Barriles offers several ways to spend time by the water: you can kayak, try stand-up paddleboarding, snorkel or take a boat trip. Motorcycle rides are also possible there. If you would rather stay on the beach, you can camp under the stars to the sound of the waves.

The months of December through March are particularly suitable for windsurfing and kitesurfing, when strong winds create favorable conditions. Whale shark encounters take place in a different season: snorkelers and divers come to Los Barriles from October through February; rare groups of these animals are observed in the sea during this period. When choosing your travel dates, you can compare these periods: October and November fall within whale shark season, December through February overlap both periods, and March is part of the wind sports season.

In the Los Barriles area, the waters of the Mar de Cortés offer opportunities for fly fishing for roosterfish, jurel and dorado. Many fish stay close to the beaches, so you can cast from shore. Half-day and full-day boat fishing trips are available, targeting larger dorado, snapper and grouper. The two tour lengths offer different time frames for this experience.

Beach access points and getting around town

Playa Los Barriles has five access points: Costa Brava via Calle 20 de Noviembre, Lazy Daze on Calle 20 de Noviembre, Arroyo in the sandy area 500 meters away, Callejón Don Pepe 1 kilometer away, and Puente Los Barriles 500 meters away. Check access conditions before your beach visit, as these details may change operationally.

From the Mirador de la Iglesia la Sagrada Familia, you can look out over the bay of Los Barriles and the community’s main beach. Visitors often stop there for a souvenir photo. The monumental Los Barriles letters are a popular photo stop at the town entrance from the direction of La Paz. They are part of a design featuring an active fountain, with water cascading onto decorative barrels. On the outskirts of town, there are also trails for horseback riding and off-road vehicle tours.

Excursions to the surrounding area

Cascada La Ciénega is 20 kilometers from Los Barriles; the distance is stated to take approximately 30 minutes. During the rainy season, from August through October, streams flow through the lush mountains to a waterfall. Activities there include hiking, ATV and Racer rides, observing flora and fauna, and landscape photography. The seasonal context is important when planning a trip there: the streams and waterfall described are part of the rainy season.

Playa Palo Blanquito is 13.7 kilometers from Los Barriles, in the direction of El Cardonal and near Punta Pescadero Paradise. The access road is an unpaved track. This completely unspoiled beach has no services at all; activities include camping, picnicking, snorkeling, diving and fishing from shore. The unpaved track and lack of services are important points to consider when planning a visit.

A piece of local handicraft

Handicrafts made from shells and snails are available in Los Barriles. These include combs, decorated mirrors, costume jewelry and hand-painted decorative items with maritime motifs. The selection ranges from small practical items to decorative pieces.
