Macao offers several perspectives on history and culture: in the Historic Centre, buildings, squares and streets form a cohesive urban setting. Temples, a garden, a museum, the Macau Tower and a diverse cuisine each add their own focus.

World Heritage as an urban ensemble

The Historic Centre of Macao is a historic district centred on the old town. More than 20 historic buildings are connected by adjoining squares and streets. The centre was added to the World Heritage List in 2005. The focus is therefore not only on individual attractions, but also on how the buildings and public spaces work together.

One landmark is the Ruins of St. Paul’s (大三巴牌坊), the surviving façade of the Church of Mater Dei. Originally known as the “Church of the Mother of God”, it was associated with the neighbouring St. Paul’s College. The church and college were built between 1602 and 1640 and destroyed by fire in 1835. Under Law No. 11/2013, the ruins are a monument and one of the 22 important buildings of the “Historic Centre of Macao” World Heritage site.

Temples, garden design and a museum

The A-Ma Temple is considered Macao’s oldest temple for which material evidence survives, and the oldest original building among Macao’s cultural assets to have been preserved. It offers a distinct point of interest alongside the historic district and its architectural history.

Lou Lim Ioc Park was laid out in the 19th century and is considered Macao’s garden with the most distinctive Suzhou-style garden architecture. Pavilions, bamboo groves, rock gardens, red lotus flowers, waterfalls, ponds, bridges and winding covered walkways are arranged around a central pavilion. The focus here is on landscape design: water, plants, stone and paths together make up the described ensemble.

The Macau Museum explores the history of Macao and its multicultural life. Its exhibitions show historical change over several centuries, as well as the peaceful coexistence of residents from different countries and cultural backgrounds. Visitors particularly interested in this broad historical and social perspective will find a different way to engage with the past here than by looking at individual buildings.

Another perspective on Macao’s cityscape

The Macau Tower is a 338-metre-high multipurpose building. Its facilities include observation decks, performances, conferences, exhibitions, shopping, dining, entertainment and communications facilities. Alongside the historical and cultural attractions, it offers a building with a wide range of uses. The main difference is one of focus: the Historic Centre presents a heritage that has developed over time, while the tower brings together numerous functions in a single building.

Culinary variety

Macao offers Macanese, Portuguese, Chinese, Southeast Asian and other international cuisines. Local snacks include almond cookies, egg rolls, pork chop buns and Portuguese egg tarts. This selection offers another perspective on the destination: alongside its architecture, exhibitions and gardens, the diversity of its cuisines is part of its local character.
