Vilnius combines a UNESCO-listed Old Town with museums and extensive green spaces. Architectural history and art sit alongside riverside landscapes, parks and seasonal winter sports.
Old Town, architecture and distinctive neighbourhoods
The historic centre of Vilnius includes a UNESCO-listed Old Town. On a walk, you’ll encounter Gothic, Renaissance, Classical and, above all, Baroque buildings. St. Anne’s Church is considered a masterpiece of late Gothic architecture and has remained almost unchanged over the past five centuries. Gediminas Tower is the surviving defensive tower of Vilnius Upper Castle; from there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city.
The neighbourhoods also have their own distinctive character. UĹľupis is a self-proclaimed bohemian enclave on the banks of the Vilnia and has its own constitution. The Glass Quarter is home to jewellers, local artists, craft shops and workshops. Individual shops may change. This brings historic architecture and a distinct cultural character together, while ensuring the two neighbourhoods each make a different impression.
Museums from castle history to contemporary art
Gediminas Tower houses a historical exhibition featuring reconstruction models of Vilnius’s castles. The MO Museum has a different focus: its exhibitions of modern Lithuanian art explore developments in Lithuanian art over the past 60 years. The collection comprises more than 5,000 works; its size may change as it develops. The museum also offers educational activities.
The Toy Museum in the Old Town brings together several periods. An archaeological section features the oldest toys, an ethnographic section presents toys from the 19th and 20th centuries, and another section showcases contemporary toys. The family-oriented educational centre is dedicated to the heritage of toys and games. Its three themed exhibitions include “The Oldest Lithuanian Toys”, “Journey to the Stone Age” and “Memories of the 20th Century”. The exhibition layout may change over time.
Parks, riverside landscapes and outdoor activities
Pavilniai Regional Park is one of two regional parks in Vilnius and protects the Vilnia Valley. The Pūčkoriai outcrop is a unique geological monument within the park. An educational historical trail runs along the Vilnia, starting at the Pūčkoriai Dam. Visitors looking to focus on the landscape and its geological significance will find a different experience here from the art museums or the Old Town.
A larger urban green space is Vingis Park: it covers 160 hectares along a bend in the Neris and is used for walking, cycling and roller skating. Concerts, events and festivals take place on the central stage; check specific event dates before making plans. The 100-km trail around Vilnius is ideal for running, walking and exploring lesser-known places. It offers a very different scale of exploration from the activities in Vingis Park.
Bernardine Garden also combines green space and history. It lies in the heart of Vilnius, between Gediminas Hill, the Vilnia and the Bernardine Monastery, and was formerly called Sereikiškės Park by residents. A botanical exhibition recalls the Botanical Gardens of Vilnius University. The oldest oak in Vilnius, about 400 years old, stands in Bernardine Garden. In winter, Liepkalnis Hill in Pavilniai Regional Park is popular with skiers; operating conditions may vary, so it’s worth checking before your visit.
Getting around and choosing what to focus on
Bus 74 leaves from the Žaliasis tiltas stop for Pavilniai Regional Park. Routes and services may change, so check the current connection before travelling. Vilnius maps also include a public transport map, though map editions may change. Guided walks are another way to explore Vilnius; individual offerings may vary.
When planning your trip, you can weigh up different interests: the Old Town and its architecture offer a cultural focus, museums provide a closer look at art and history, while parks and trails offer space for outdoor activities. If you visit Vilnius in winter, you can also consider Liepkalnis as a seasonal winter sports destination. Check current conditions and choose your hotel based on which aspects of the city interest you most.
