From the defensive architecture of Medininkai Castle to the century-old water turbine at the Liubavas Manor Mill Museum, the area spans a range of architectural history and historic technology. Vilnius District Municipality also offers insights into regional customs and landscapes. To plan your trip, you can first choose a focus: are you interested in castles, former production methods, cultural collections or a challenging hike? Each place offers something different.

Castle and the History of Technology

Medininkai Castle has four towers and defensive ditches. Its walls are 1.8 to 1.9 metres thick and up to 15 metres high; the main tower, a keep, reaches about 30 metres. The defensive architecture is defined not only by the height of the main tower, but also by the walls, towers and ditches. The castle underwent further restoration and was adapted for museum use between 2010 and 2012.

The Liubavas Manor Mill Museum focuses on historic production methods. It demonstrates a historic watermill and more than ten other production processes, including woodworking, metalworking, fulling and electricity generation. The museum also presents the history of the manor and the processes and technologies once used there. The fully restored technological equipment includes a functioning century-old water turbine. This place thus combines a presentation of work in the past with a concrete example of technology.

Museums and Regional Culture

The Vladislavo Sirokomlė Museum is located in the poet’s former study. Its exhibits include furniture, portraits, books and other personal belongings. The Vilnius Region Ethnographic Museum in Nemenčinė offers a different perspective: its exhibits document the everyday life and customs of the residents of the Vilnius region. The museum also holds ceramics and weaving workshops. Opening arrangements and workshop dates may change; check before your visit.

The Čekoniškių kaimo verbų ir buities seklyčia focuses on the traditions, customs and culture of the Vilnius region. It displays, in particular, characteristic verbos and household items. The Traditional Crafts Centre at Houvaltai Manor also preserves the region’s traditions and customs, but focuses on traditional crafts and offers special lessons. Comparing the two shows how differently regional culture can be presented: through collections of objects or through hands-on engagement with crafts.

Landscape, Art and Activity

Neris Regional Park is located within Vilnius District Municipality. The municipality also has eight geomorphological, two hydrographic, two botanical, two ornithological, one ichthyological, two telmological and three landscape reserves. For an active outing, the Dūkštos educational trail is another option: the five-kilometre route is physically demanding. When planning, consider both its length and its explicitly challenging nature.

The “Vilnoja” Sculpture Park offers a different focus. More than 70 monumental granite sculptures are on display, with sculptures shown both in the landscape and in the lake. At Aukštojas Hill, there are benches, a car park, bicycle racks, an observation tower and information boards. As facilities may change, check the current situation before your visit.

Getting Your Bearings

The Europos Geographical Centre is 26 kilometres north of Vilnius, in the direction of Molėtai, between the villages of Purnuškės and Bernotai. There is an information centre where visitors can purchase a certificate of their visit. If you would like to take advantage of this offer, check the current arrangements in advance.

Lazdėnai railway station can also serve as a starting point for another leg of your journey: from there, visitors can continue by bicycle or on foot along the tourist route on the left bank of the Neris. Check the current train timetable as you plan. This lets you combine the cultural and landscape attractions of Vilnius District Municipality with suitable travel arrangements.
