Daugirdiškės is part of Vilnius County and Elektrėnai Municipality. The historic character of the place can be traced through two distinct features: a small chapel pillar with a sculpture and the former manor on an island in Lake Monis. One story raises the question of original and copy; the other connects a specific island location with changing uses.

The Chapel Pillar and the Sculpture’s History

The Daugirdiškės chapel pillar is a small structure with a cross and a sculpture. The damaged original is kept at the Trakai History Museum; a copy of the former sculpture was placed at its original location. The original and the copy are two distinct points of reference in the sculpture’s history. Check with the museum before your visit to see whether the original is on display.

A wooden sculpture of Saint John of Nepomuk was created at the end of the 19th century. Its dating adds a specific historical point in time to the description. The material and the saint depicted provide a different focus from the story of preservation and copying: those interested in sacred art can consider the date of its creation and its history of transmission as two distinct questions.

The Manor on the Island

Daugirdiškės Manor once stood on a ten-hectare island in Lake Monis. A causeway connected the island to the shore. The area gives the island location a concrete dimension; the causeway adds its historic connection to the shore. The landscape and location are therefore an integral part of the manor’s history.

The surviving ruins on the island are considered the remains of a Roman grain store, later used as the J. Tiškevičius distillery. This sequence involves two distinct functions: first the grain store, then the distillery. This change of use offers a separate way to explore the history of the ruins, alongside the manor’s location on the island.

Routes and Getting There

Daugirdiškės Manor is a planned stop on the “Get to know Elektrėnai region” route, with one hour allocated for this stop. The route is described as 79 kilometres long, with a surface comprising 80 percent asphalt and 20 percent unpaved road. The one-hour estimate applies to the stop, while the distance refers to the route as a whole. Route details may change; check them before planning.

A 2022 description of a cycling loop in the wider Trakai area passes through Daugirdiškės and Semeliškės. This cycling loop is a different planning option from the described stop at the manor on the route. Road and route conditions may change; check them before setting off.

Bus route 212 runs between Vievis, Daugirdiškės, and Semeliškės. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable before setting off. This will help you weigh up a visit to the historic site, a stop on the Elektrėnai route, or a cycling loop as distinct parts of your trip.
