Around Kaimynai, natural heritage, ancient fortification sites and insights into local history come together. The area offers different focal points: views of the meanders of the Šventoji, an approximately seven-kilometre-long nature trail, cultural sites in Užpaliai and a canoe route. For planning, it is worth distinguishing between two hillforts: from Lygamiškis Hillfort there is a view of Užpaliai and the river; Šeimyniškiai Hillfort is a stop on the canoe route.

Natural Heritage and Views Around Kaimynai

The spring and stone of Krokulė are state-protected as a natural heritage site and included in the Register of Cultural Values. The Šeimyniškiai outcrops and the conglomerate rock are also part of the natural heritage site; this designation has been in place since 1999. The two natural sites give the landscape around Kaimynai its own historical and geological dimension.

At Lygamiškis Hillfort, the history of the place and a wide view come together: the site is dated to the 1st millennium, and from there you can see Užpaliai and the meanders of the Šventoji. Šeimyniškiai Hillfort has a different role in the area. It is dated from the 1st millennium to the 15th century. According to tradition, old Užpaliai and Užpaliai Castle were located there.

History and Culture in Kaimynai and Užpaliai

The development of the settlement is associated with farmsteads near noble estates. The Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Užpaliai is also nearby: the historicist-style building was consecrated in 1898. Its organ with 16 stops and the bell tower are included in the Register of Cultural Values.

The Krokulė spring also has a historical connection. Writings from the mid-19th century mention it; a brick chapel was built there in 1903. In Kamenyčia, at Užpaliai Manor, the collection includes traditional Aukštaitian towels. Other topics on display include an old administrative office, girls’ household life and crafts, and an old classroom. The exhibitions may change.

On Foot, on the Water or at an Event

The nature trail in Vyžuonų Forest is about 7 km long. Its features include ancient Vyžuonų burial mounds, a botanical community conservation area and natural meadows. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out. On the canoe route “Gamtos paveldas iš vandens” on the Šventoji, Šeimyniškiai Hillfort is a stop with a planned break of 30 minutes. At the Užpaliai hydropower plant, canoeists must carry their boats past it—a specific point to take into account when planning the route.

At the “Kamenyčios gardėsiai” event, visitors can bake yeast buns and enjoy fresh pastries with aromatic tea. Check the dates and availability in advance, as booking options may change. Around Kaimynai, different interests take centre stage: nature and landscape, cultural history or an activity on the Šventoji.
