Leliūnai combines local history with natural attractions nearby. The town is home to the Museum of Sacred Art and the present-day church; other aspects take center stage near Narkūnai and on the Ąžuolija Nature Trail. You can tailor your stay to whether you are mainly interested in churches and history or would also like to discover a landscape and specific trail options.

Churches and sacred art in Leliūnai

The Leliūnai Museum of Sacred Art is located at Kauno g. 27. If you are planning a visit, check visiting arrangements in advance. The church’s history offers two clearly separated points in time: in 1788, the landowner Juozas Pomarnackas had a second wooden church built, measuring 12 × 28 m². The present-day church was built in 1905.

Narkūnai: hillfort and the origins of Utena

Near Narkūnai, in the vicinity of Leliūnai, a castle belonging to Daumantas, Duke of Nalšia, is thought to have stood in the 13th century. A settlement developed near the castle and is considered the origin of the city of Utena; the settlement was burned down by the Livonian Order in 1433. The hillfort is on the left bank of the Utenaitė stream and has steep slopes 13–14 m high. Here, a historical interpretation presented as a possibility meets a precisely described landscape. Narkūnai is therefore a separate historical point of interest in the surrounding area, not part of Leliūnai’s town center.

Choosing a route on the Ąžuolija Nature Trail

The Ąžuolija Nature Trail is in Leliūnų eldership and is part of the destination’s surrounding area. It is about 1.6 km long and linear, so it is not a loop. You can return along the same route; alternatively, you can take the 2.4 km Tylos Trail. The two routes differ in length by 0.8 km. But the route layout also matters when planning: on the Ąžuolija Trail, the return journey follows the same route, while Tylos Trail is described as an alternative return route. Visitors can reach 14 stations along the marked route. The length, return route and stations give you specific points of reference for comparing the two trail options.

Forest landscape and protected area

Ąžuolijos Forest is also in Leliūnų eldership. It belongs to the northern subzone of Central European broadleaf forests; the predominant tree species are oaks, aspens, ash trees and lindens. The forest also has a defined area: in 2001, 68.2 ha of it were designated the Ąžuolija Municipal Botanical-Zoological Reserve by a decision of the Utena District Council. The protected-area designation applies to this part of the forest.

Getting your bearings for the journey

Leliūnai extends along both sides of the historic post road, whose route today corresponds to the A6 Kaunas–Zarasai–Daugpilis highway. This connects the town with a named road axis. When preparing for your journey, you can use this name to orient yourself and consider the local history and nearby destinations as different focal points for your stay.
