Zaviesiškis brings together village history and a geological destination nearby: the village developed around Zaviesiškis Manor, while the Vetygala outcrop lies close to the settlement. These two themes offer different ways to explore the area—the development of a settlement and the history of the Earth along the river. Zaviesiškis lies on both sides of the Anykščiai–Ukmergė regional road. The Susiena flows along its northeastern edge; it is a right-bank tributary of the Šventoji.

Manor History and Remembrance

Zaviesiškis Manor belonged to the noble Maigys family, whose name also appears as Moigis. The village developed around the manor, which has been known since the early 19th century. The history also includes Jonas Maigys: after his death in the 1863 uprising, a memorial to him was erected in the manor garden. The timeline thus stretches from the early 19th century to a specific event in 1863—two distinct reference points for understanding the development and remembrance of the place. The Alberto Kuliešius Memorial Museum near Zaviesiškis displays a self-portrait, wood carvings, and comic books drawn in ink. Exhibits may change.

Geology at the Vetygala Outcrop

The Vetygala outcrop lies near Zaviesiškis on the right bank of the Šventoji. It is 26 metres high; the exposed geological section is about 420 metres long, and the layers are around 400 million years old. These figures describe three different characteristics: height, the length of the visible section, and the age of the layers. This makes it clear whether the subject is the shape of the outcrop or the history of the Earth. Vetygala is a geological natural heritage site and natural monument within Anykščiai Regional Park and the Anykščiai Forest Landscape Reserve. The outcrop has stairs, paths, and viewing platforms for visitors. As the infrastructure may change, check its current condition before your visit.

A Longer Cycling Tour Through the Region

The cycling tour to the outcrops of the Anykščiai region is 60 kilometres long and designed to take one or two days. It follows paved and gravel roads, a wooden boardwalk, and field tracks. The surface changes along the route, so you should not expect just one type of terrain. After about ten kilometres, the route reaches Zaviesiškis and directs cyclists to the Vetygala outcrop. The roughly ten kilometres mark a point on the tour, while 60 kilometres is the total route length. Signposting and route conditions may change; check both before setting out.

A Visit to the Village or a Cycling Tour?

The scale is therefore key when planning your trip: Zaviesiškis can be the cultural focus, while the 60-kilometre cycling tour is an itinerary for one or two days. The village lies about ten kilometres along the tour, so a stay focused on the village and the full route can be considered as different planning choices. The manor’s history and the memorial offer a glimpse into the village’s past, while the nearby outcrop draws attention to geological development. This lets you choose between a local focus and a longer tour through the region.
