Telšiai combines paths by Lake Mastis with sculptures, museums and the history of the Žemaitija region. For planning your trip, there are a range of options to choose from: time outdoors, regional culture, Jewish history and distinctive collections. Activities range from walking and cycling routes to historical exhibitions and hands-on experiences. Which ones you combine depends on the subjects you want to explore in greater depth in Telšiai.

Exploring Lake Mastis

A network of walking and cycling paths runs along the shore of Lake Mastis. Zakso Hill, also called Zakso Mountain, is also on the lakeshore and is a place to relax and go for a walk. A named cycling route, “Aplink Telšių miestą dviračiais,” is 14 kilometres long and rated easy. It leads to one of the most beautiful nature trails in the Germantas Landscape Reserve in Telšiai District. Route details may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Sculptures and regional culture

The sculpture park of the Telšiai Faculty of the Vilnius Academy of Arts was established on 21 October 2011 on the shore of Lake Mastis. It displays 21 sculptures. New works may be added, so the collection may continue to grow.

The Old Town of Telšiai is one of Lithuania’s seven protected old towns with architectural heritage. The Žemaitija Village Museum comprises 16 authentic buildings. Visitors can learn traditional weaving on old looms, make toys and felt wool there. The availability of these programmes may vary. The activities offer a hands-on introduction to traditional crafts, while the buildings provide the museum’s historical focus.

Museums and historical perspectives

The historical exhibition at the Žemaitija Museum “Alka” presents the tangible and spiritual culture of the Žemaitija region. The museum offers guided tours and educational activities that can be booked. Booking arrangements may change.

The Telšiai Yeshiva is located in the historic Jewish school of higher learning in Telšiai. Through the memories of Holocaust survivors, it tells the story of the yeshiva and the Jewish community of Telšiai. Its educational programmes cover Jewish history in Lithuania, Litvak culture, Jewish traditions and everyday Jewish life. Booking arrangements for these activities may change.

Collections and tastings

The Bear Museum in Telšiai houses more than 5,837 bears and teddy bears made from different materials and in a variety of sizes and shapes. The collection may continue to grow. This offers a very different kind of collection alongside the historical museums.

Cheese tastings of DŽIUGAS® are offered at Sūrio DŽIUGAS Namai, Respublikos g. 49-7. Check availability before your trip.
