Grumbliai and its location

Grumbliai is a village in Plungė District Municipality, 12 km northeast of Plungė and south of Alsėdžiai. It is the centre of Paukštakiai Eldership and Grumbliai Eldership. The village lies 1 km north of the Šiauliai–Palanga highway and next to the Šiauliai–Kretinga railway and a main road. By contrast, the Šiauliai–Klaipėda railway crosses Paukštakiai Eldership. This makes it possible to distinguish the village’s location from the transport links of the eldership.

Landscape features

A high ridge runs through Paukštakiai and Grumbliai. Paukštakiai Eldership is wooded, particularly in the north; its northern part lies within Žemaitija National Park. The geographical references differ: the ridge runs through both places, while the national park designation applies to the northern part of the eldership.

Hiking trails with their own character

The Paplatelė hiking trail follows wooded hills and the shore of Sultekis Pond. Along the route are wooden sculptures inspired by Lithuanian folk tales. This brings a distinctive forest and lakeside landscape together with folkloric imagery on the same trail.

The Šeirės hiking trail is 4.1 km long, of which 1.4 km is adapted for people with disabilities. As infrastructure may change, check the condition of the adapted sections before your visit if they are important to your plans. The trail passes through the Platelių Landscape Reserve and includes Šeirės Forest, Gaudupis Bog, Piktežeris and Lake Plateliai. Compared with the Paplatelė trail, the focus here is on the total length, an adapted section and several named landscape features; the Paplatelė trail is characterised by wooded hills, the pond shore and sculptures. The adapted section accounts for about one third of the total length. The two figures answer two different planning questions: 4.1 km is the length of the entire trail, while 1.4 km refers to the part adapted for people with disabilities.

Village life and culture

A community announcement from 2025 describes “Gera būti kartu” as an annual summer festival in Grumbliai. Check the dates for the year you plan to travel. A Lourdes Grotto in Grumbliai was mentioned as early as 2017. A stone park is located at a private homestead in the village.

A newspaper article from 2012 recounts how residents prepared homemade bread and cheese for local events. Another report describes an outdoor stage in Grumbliai intended for community concerts and invited performers.

Exhibition and cultural history

In Plateliai, the Žemaitija National Park exhibition covers Plateliai Manor, old Plateliai, Castle Island and Samogitian ethnography. Its themes range from the history of the manor and the town to regional ethnography. While the hiking trails draw on the landscape and folk-tale motifs, the exhibition brings together cultural and historical themes.
