Those interested in cultural history, industry, and historic buildings will find a range of highlights in Mažeikiai District Municipality. The Mažeikiai Museum presents both the cultural heritage of Žemaitija and the history of oil processing. A manor house and pharmacy museum, an archaeological hillfort, and cultural monuments round out the selection. When planning your trip, it is especially helpful to decide whether you want to focus on exhibitions, historic sites, or spending time outdoors.
Museums bridging regional culture and industrial history
The Mažeikiai Museum presents the region of Žemaitija through its history, archaeology, ethnography, and folk art. The exhibition “Mažeikių kraštas: tarp kuršių, žiemgalių ir žemaičių” explores the cultural heritage of the Kuršių, Žiemgalių, and Žemaičių peoples. The permanent exhibition “Naftos kelias” offers a different perspective: it covers the extraction and processing of petroleum products, production processes and products, as well as the history of the Mažeikiai oil refinery. The same museum thus brings together regional cultural history and a specific chapter in industrial history.
Manor culture and pharmacy
Since 2012, a museum exhibition at the restored Renavo Manor Estate has introduced visitors to Lithuanian manor culture. The Viekšnių Pharmacy Museum also offers varied insights into local and everyday history. It is a rural-style pharmacy museum; the pharmacist's family's living quarters have been preserved, along with the pharmacy's complete history, recorded entirely by hand. The exhibitions include one on pharmacy, a depiction of the household of an intellectual from the first half of the 20th century, and an exhibition in the medicinal plant garden. Medicinal and culinary plants are grown there. The museum also offers hands-on educational activities.
Another exhibition on medicinal plants can be found at the organic medicinal plant farm of herbalist and pharmacognosist Jadvyga Balvočiūtė. Groups and individual visitors can tour the medicinal plant exhibition. Those interested in plants can therefore choose between the exhibitions at the Viekšnių Pharmacy Museum and the medicinal plant farm. The “Muzikinė vasara Dautaruose” festival is also held at Dautarai Manor.
Hillfort, church, and cultural heritage along the Venta
Near Gyvoliai is the Piliakalnis hillfort, known as Švedkalnis. It is a small defensive fort dating from the 1st millennium to the 13th century. Visitors will find wooden walkways, an information board, a viewpoint, and marked paths. The site thus combines archaeological context with practical features for a visit.
The Pikelių Church of the Holy Trinity is an architectural monument of national significance. Its seven Renaissance- and Baroque-style altars are recognized as art monuments of national significance. The railway bridge structure over the Venta is also designated a cultural asset: the Geležinkelio tilto per Ventą statinių kompleksas complex was classified as an immovable cultural asset in 2007.
Outdoor recreation
The Plinkšiai recreation area is suitable for events and has several viewpoints. It also has a path designed to support recreation for people with disabilities. Along with the visitor paths laid out at Švedkalnis, the area offers a different focus from the museums and historic buildings. These places cater to different interests: exhibitions provide insights into culture, pharmacy, and industrial history, while viewpoints and paths make spending time outdoors the main attraction.
