Joniškis brings together a range of cultural and historical themes: a church with a distinctive architectural form and recognized heritage significance, museums covering history and sport, and portrayals of the historic town square. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether architecture, museum collections or the history of the urban space will be your main focus.

Church Architecture and Heritage History

The present-day church in Joniškis was built in 1901. It has a single nave and a tower, is three-aisled and cruciform; its bell tower is 59.83 meters high, and the church also has seven altars. It is recognized as national cultural heritage under No. 2482 for its significance in architecture, art, sacred history and archaeology. This brings together different aspects in one building: its architectural form, altars and broad heritage significance. Those interested in churches can consider these features as different ways of approaching the same church.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

The Joniškis Museum of History and Culture displays ethnographic, archaeological and sacred artifacts. Its objects include reconstructed Semigallian costumes, as well as weapons and armor from the Livonian Order. Clothing, weapons and armor give concrete form to this range, while the three exhibition areas cover more than one subject. This gives the museum a broader cultural and historical perspective than the collections focused on sport.

The private Joniškis Table Tennis Museum is located in the Šiaurės vartai Hotel in central Joniškis. Its collection includes almost 5,000 table tennis balls and more than 10,000 other table-tennis-related exhibits. The collection figures may change. The balls are therefore only part of the collection, which as a whole is devoted to table tennis. The Joniškis Basketball Museum takes a different approach: in several halls, it tells the story of basketball in Joniškis, Lithuania and around the world in an engaging and educational way. It also displays photographs of the country's best basketball players and the medals they have won.

By comparison, the Table Tennis Museum focuses on its collection and objects, while the Basketball Museum tells a story across several geographic levels. This distinction can help you choose a subject: you can focus on a substantial collection or on how a sport is presented in local, national and global history.

Town Square and Cultural Sites

The model “Istorinė Joniškio turgaus aikštė (1703 m.)” depicts the historic market square from the early 18th century and is located in Joniškis's present-day town square. The mural “Joniškis prieš 100 metų” also relates to the town square: it was created based on a historical photograph. The two works therefore share the same subject but depict it in different ways—as a model of a historic square and as a mural based on a photograph.

Cultural and artistic activities take place in Joniškis's two synagogues, including exhibitions, conferences, concerts and festivals. This means that the range of cultural themes also includes different event formats, alongside buildings, collections and depictions of the townscape. This gives you several points of interest, without all the sites telling the same story: one focus could be sacred architecture, another sports history or the portrayal of the former town square.
