Žibartoniai offers two clear starting points for planning a trip: a walking trail between Vadaktai and Paberžė, and a local chapel history. The 20.1-kilometre walking trail passes through the village; the full route is estimated to take five hours on foot. This gives travellers who want to make the trail the focus of their visit a concrete time frame. Those with a stronger interest in culture will find an annual theatre comedy festival alongside the historic chapel. Žibartoniai is located 9 km west of Krekenava.

Streamside scenery and route orientation

The walking trail runs alongside the Liaudė Stream and cultivated fields for almost five kilometres. Near Žibartoniai, the stream becomes Žibartonių tvenkinys. A small cemetery and Žibartonių koplyčia lie about 200 metres from the pond. On this stretch, Žibartonių kapinės cemetery is considered a quiet place to rest; from there, it is another four kilometres to Paberžė. These distances refer to different scales: around 200 metres locates the chapel and cemetery in relation to the pond, while four kilometres marks the remaining route to Paberžė. The five-hour walking time applies to the entire route, not to a visit to the pond or chapel alone. Allow additional time for breaks and time spent at the sites, beyond the walking time itself.

Chapel history across several building phases

The chapel’s history dates back to 1811, when the estate owner Vincentas Vyšniauskas had a wooden chapel built in Žibartoniai. After the first wooden chapel fell into disrepair, a new masonry chapel was built in 1937 with funds from Vincentas Banaitis, a worker who had returned from America, and local residents. This rebuilt chapel was consecrated on 30 May 1938 under the patronage of Saint Vincent de Paul. The dates mark different milestones: 1811 refers to the first wooden building, 1937 to the new masonry building, and 1938 to its consecration. The patronage refers to the chapel’s religious dedication and adds another specific point of reference to its building history. The difference lies not only in the materials: the first wooden chapel was commissioned by an estate owner, while the later masonry building, erected after its predecessor fell into disrepair, was made possible through contributions from Vincentas Banaitis, who had returned from America, and local residents.

Theatre festival as a cultural highlight

The annual theatre comedy festival “O buvo taip” takes place in the cultural centre part of Žibartoniai. This provides a specifically named theatre event alongside the chapel history. The event offers a different focus from the historic building phases: it centres on a recurring cultural event in the village. If the theatre comedy festival is the reason for your trip, check the exact date in advance and choose your stay dates accordingly.
