The spacious, car-free village square is a defining feature of Eschen’s centre. Beneath it is a roomy underground car park for visitors and customers of the surrounding shops. The town centre thus provides a clear landmark; themes for a stay range from architectural and pilgrimage history to seasonal events and routes on Eschnerberg.
Local history between chapel, church and mill
The chapel on Rofenberg is dedicated to the Holy Cross, is a historic site of national importance and is a landmark of the municipality of Eschen. From 1573 to 1808, the court of the former Lordship of Schellenberg convened in front of the chapel; the site also frequently served as the assembly place of the Untere Landschaft court district. The listed parish church of St Martin was built in 1893/94. Eschen’s historic Gastelun-Gasse (Castellun-Gasse) is also connected with pilgrimage history: it formed part of the pilgrimage route to Einsiedeln and Santiago de Compostela.
The year 1778 is inscribed above the entrance to the mill; originally, it served as a lordly wine press. A memorial in the sports park commemorates the Pope’s visit to the municipality. In the present-day village district of Nendeln, the foundations of a Roman estate can be seen in a field.
Routes with different points of interest
The Historic High Trail extends across the entire Eschnerberg; Eschen lies approximately halfway along it. Illustrated information panels at historically interesting or scenically distinctive points provide information about history, nature and the landscape. Five signposted circular hiking trails on Eschnerberg pass important prehistoric sites and invite visitors to explore or take a walk. You can choose a route according to your interests: information panels on history, nature and the landscape along the high trail, or archaeological sites along the circular trails.
The cultural circular trail through Eschen starts in the centre, opposite the municipal building and right by the Pfrund buildings, and is very easy to reach by public transport. The nearby Riet is also ideal for longer walks and offers peace amid nature that remains largely untouched. Cycle paths also run in and around Eschen, with direct connections to the cycling network.
Events and local food culture
At the annual Milling Day in spring, visitors can follow the journey of the corn kernel, the individual stages of milling and how the mill works. The traditional Bretschalauf starts each April in Eschen’s village square. The church consecration festival on Rofenberg, known as «Kappele-Kelbi», takes place on the first Sunday after 3 May; the exact programme may vary. The Unterland fair is held in Eschen every October. If you would like to plan your visit around a festival, check the latest programme information.
Local food culture is also connected with corn: Eschen’s Tüergga is said to have always made excellent Rebel. Rebel is a corn dish that was served daily in earlier times. Milling Day offers a glimpse into how the grain is processed, while the story of Rebel describes a former everyday dish.
Indoor swimming pool in Eschen
Eschen indoor swimming pool is the only indoor pool in Liechtenstein’s Unterland. It has a sports pool, a non-swimmers’ pool and a toddler pool. If you have a particular pool area in mind, check the current facilities before your visit.
