Ziemeļgauja is a unique landscape along the natural, unregulated Gauja River. A system of oxbow lakes, botanically valuable meadows, and old mixed and broadleaf forests define the area. Historic sites in Valkas Municipality include the Valka Local History Museum, the Vijciema cone kiln, the “Ielīcas” farmstead, and the Ērģeme Castle ruins.
The Gauja Landscape and Nature Trail
What makes Ziemeļgauja special is not only the river, but also the landscape system along its banks. It includes oxbow lakes, botanically valuable meadows, and old mixed and broadleaf forests.
For a short walk, take the 1.3-kilometre Lustiņdruvas Nature Trail. There is a forest fitness area and an obstacle course along the trail, adding active elements to your nature exploration. As trail conditions and infrastructure can change, check the latest conditions before you travel.
The History of Education at the Valka Local History Museum
The Valka Local History Museum is housed in the building where the Vidzeme Seminary for parish schoolteachers operated from 1853 to 1890. Its permanent exhibitions cover the seminary and the cultural and educational work of its students from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The permanent exhibitions also explore Valka as the birthplace of Latvian independence. At the museum, you can learn about the cultural heritage left by Jānis Cimze and his students and trace historical developments in Valkas Municipality. The exhibits connect a specific educational institution with the history of the region. As permanent exhibitions may be updated, check what is currently on display before your visit.
Industrial History and a Traditional Farmstead
The Vijciema cone kiln is protected as a state industrial monument of national importance. It operated continuously from 1895 until the 1970s and resumed work in 1992. The facility still uses original equipment more than 100 years old to extract seeds for new forests.
A different form of cultural heritage is preserved at the ethnographic “Ielīcas” farmstead in Vijciema parish. It is a state cultural monument dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The complete building complex, typical of the region, includes a dwelling house, a bathhouse, three granaries, a stable, a barn, a carriage house, and a cellar. This variety shows that the site is not just a single historic dwelling, but an entire farmstead with residential and farm buildings. Access may be restricted during restoration work; check in advance whether visits are possible.
Castle Ruins and Musical History
In Ērģeme, the ruins of a 14th- to 16th-century Livonian Order castle remain, including a round, four-storey corner tower. The castle ruins are a state monument of historical and archaeological importance. A wooden walkway leads from the castle ruins to the ruins of Ērģeme Church. If you plan to include this route, check trail conditions and accessibility in advance.
The Jānis Lūsēns Music House at Ozolu skola displays a collection of musical instruments belonging to composer Jānis Lūsēns, in a historic building with a large acoustically designed hall. The focus here is on musical instruments; the Valka Local History Museum covers regional history, while the Vijciema cone kiln features historic equipment. Advance booking is required.
