Roja offers several distinct highlights: the coast and promenade, marked circular trails and watersports on the Roja River, as well as exhibitions on fishing and cultural history. A centrally located forest park and a summer concert hall near the sea and beach round out the options. Choosing which of these aspects to focus on gives your trip planning a clear direction.

Beach and Promenade

Roja’s designated public beach is a place for recreation and leisure, with white sand for those seeking peace, nature and the sea. The wooden promenade along the beach was extended in 2020. It is more than 800 metres long, runs towards Kolka, and is suitable for cyclists, pedestrians, pushchairs and people with functional impairments. Before visiting, it is advisable to check its current condition. Beach conditions may vary by season.

Forest Park and River Trails

“Plocis” Forest Park is in the centre of Roja, on Parka Street. Its facilities include walking paths and a play area with a three-metre-high climbing wall and swings. Fitness and exercise equipment adds to what is on offer.

A nature trail along the Roja River has three marked circular routes of 2, 7 and 15 kilometres. The routes are marked in yellow, blue and red, and can all be followed in either direction. They share the same circular format, but differ considerably in distance: two kilometres is the shortest option, seven kilometres is in between, and 15 kilometres is the longest loop. This lets you choose a route to suit your preferred distance.

For activities on the river, SPURA rents out SUP boards, kayaks, rowboats and water bikes. Advance arrangements may be required for rentals. You can therefore choose between marked walking trails and rental activities on the water.

Fishing and Cultural History

The Roja Marine Fisheries Museum displays fishing boats, anchors and a machine for sealing fish cans. One exhibition is dedicated to Krišjānis Valdemārs, the Roja maritime school and the construction of sailing ships in the 19th century. Another covers the history of fish processing on the Roja coast from the 19th century to the present day; an interactive exhibition focuses on the Soviet era on the Roja coast.

The Roja Cultural Centre has an auditorium with 400 seats and an exhibition hall. The Rojas brīvdabas estrāde is a summer concert venue just a few steps from the sea and Roja’s public beach.

A Fish Feast as a Group Activity

“Mielasts Zvejnieku sētā” introduces visitors to the work of fishermen and includes local seafood. The fish feast is cooked over an open fire and includes fish soup, rye bread, smoked fish, beer and water from the Roja spring. The Hotel “Roja” and SIA “Pundiķi” offer this bookable programme to interested groups of 15 to 40 people. Advance booking is required.
