The White Dune is an 18-metre-high sand outcrop offering views of the sea, the mouth of the Inčupe River and the expansive beach. Its formation also tells a story about the coastal landscape: beach sand carried by the wind accumulated over clayey sediments of the Baltic Ice Lake. In Saulkrasti Municipality, remarkable landforms like these meet trails, nature watching and cultural history.

Coast, Dunes and Protected Nature

Saulkrasti Municipality lies on the coast of the Gulf of Riga in western Vidzeme. The area stretches 17 kilometres along the coast and extends 20 kilometres east to the Loja River. The international Via Baltica highway runs through the municipality. Piejūra Nature Park is a specially protected natural area that includes Saulkrasti Municipality. Its landscapes include wooded dunes, grey dunes, coastal meadows and lakes with oligotrophic to mesotrophic plant communities. The park contains 24 habitat types of EU importance, which together cover 84 percent of its area.

The coastal sections also differ from one another. Lilaste has singing sand. The rocky coast of Zvejniekciems lies between Skulte Port and Saulkrasti Beach and is well suited to walks and quiet nature watching. At the mouth of the Aģe River, where it flows into the sea near Skulte Port, there is a promenade for walking and a marina. Centrs bathing area in the centre of Saulkrasti has Blue Flag status; check its status for the season you plan to visit.

Seaside and Inland Trails

The Sunset Trail runs from the White Dune to the centre of Saulkrasti. Along the way, it passes sandy beach, foredunes, the Pēterupe River and tall pines; views of the river valley and the sea are part of the trail. The Ķirezers Nature Trail follows a 1.2-kilometre route around the lake. Blue markings on the trees indicate the trail. Near Murjāņi, a walking trail follows the Loja River, where several sandstone cliffs and caves can be found. Choose between a coastal trail, a lakeside loop and a riverside walk.

In winter, a cross-country ski trail is set up near the White Dune. Before your trip, check whether the trail is maintained during the winter season in question and what condition it is in. Jūras Park has playground equipment, outdoor exercise equipment, a street workout area and a beach volleyball court. The park is also suitable for running by the sea. In addition to trails through dunes and along waterways, you will find facilities for outdoor exercise.

Museums and Traces of History

The Sauna Museum in Sēja Parish introduces traditional Latvian saunas and sauna traditions. It is open year-round. Book museum visits and guided tours in advance with the hosts. The Saulkrasti Bicycle Museum focuses on the history of the bicycle and houses Latvia’s only collection of historic bicycles. Exhibits include an early high-wheel bicycle, a bicycle with early pneumatic tyres and a wooden bicycle.

Buildings and archaeological sites also tell stories of different eras. The present-day Pēterupe Lutheran Church is the fourth place of worship on this site; it was built in 1856. The first building was constructed in 1641. Sēja Manor House dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and was remodelled with Neo-Gothic decorations between 1883 and 1885.

The Murjāņi ancient burial ground comprises about 60 burial mounds of various sizes. It shows that Gauja Livonians lived in the Sēja area from the 11th to the 13th century. Sēja Grand Oak is a Latvian natural monument and a major tourist attraction in Sēja Parish. The discovery of the municipality therefore extends beyond coastal landscapes and trails: natural monuments and archaeological evidence are also part of its story.
