Ropaži combines a castle history dating back to the Middle Ages with a riverside landscape along the Lielā Jugla. It also has the history of the manor, as well as a church and a chapel with distinct building phases. This gives you two specific areas of focus for your stay: historic architecture and a walk by the river. You can choose to explore Ropaži’s cultural history and landscape from these different perspectives.

Castle Ruins on the Banks of the Lielā Jugla

The ruins of Ropaži Castle date from the 14th century. In 1559, the castle was burned down by Muscovite troops. Together, these dates show its medieval origins and the turning point of 1559. The ruins lie on the banks of the Lielā Jugla, beside the P10 road. Their historical context and riverside location are two distinct features. If you are interested in the medieval history of the area, the castle makes a focus of its own during your stay.

Church, Chapel and Manor

The religious buildings offer another historical focus. A new wooden church was built in Ropaži in 1775; the present-day masonry church was built in 1893 in the Neo-Gothic style. The materials and style help distinguish the two building phases: the older building was made of wood, while the present-day church is masonry and Neo-Gothic. A municipal description from December 2021 noted that restoration work on the church had been ongoing since 1997. If you are planning to visit the church, check access in advance.

Baron Kampenhausen’s chapel was built in the late 18th century. Another historical detail concerns the new family chapel: a person was buried there in a marble sarcophagus. The origins of Ropaži Manor date back to the 17th century. The present-day rectory was built in the early 19th century on the site of an earlier wooden rectory from the 18th century, and was completed in 1804.

Historically, the rectory served as the residence of Lutheran pastors and included associated fields, farm buildings, distilleries and farms. Its history therefore extends beyond the residential building alone: it also encompasses the agricultural and economic activities associated with the rectory. Unlike the castle, whose history is shaped by its medieval origins and the events of 1559, the rectory offers a glimpse into the historical use of a larger estate.

A Walk and Riverside Scenery

A walk along the Lielā Jugla combines the sound of the flowing river with a landscape where the past and modern architecture meet. The walk is suitable for travellers of all ages. Below the hydroelectric power plant, the Lielā Jugla is calm; when water levels are low, it is shallow there.

You can therefore choose what to focus on during your stay: the dated buildings offer a glimpse into local history, while the walk turns your attention to the river and landscape. Looking for a holiday apartment in Ropaži and deciding what to focus on during your stay can go hand in hand with a specific question: would you rather explore the historic buildings or the Lielā Jugla?
