Salaspils brings together a range of themes: the history of the Salaspils Memorial, botanical collections, walking trails, and traces of architecture and landscape design. When planning your stay, you can focus on the specific differences: one route leads to notable trees, while another connects stops featuring poetry; botanical exhibitions require advance registration.

History and Culture

The Salaspils Memorial is located on the site of the Salaspils camp, which operated from 1941 to 1944. The Daugava Museum offers a different historical perspective: its interactive permanent exhibition presents the history of the Daugava and Salaspils Municipality. The two topics have distinct focuses—the camp and its history on the one hand, and the Daugava and the history of the municipality on the other.

Architecture and garden history offer their own perspectives, too. The ruins of St. George’s Church are an architectural monument from the 14th century, with Romanesque and Gothic features. Dole Manor Park was established in 1776; its landscape design dates from the late 18th to early 19th century. The two periods are easy to distinguish: the church highlights building history and stylistic features, while the park focuses on the creation and design of a landscaped area.

Botanical Diversity and Walking Trails

The arboretum at the National Botanic Garden contains more than 4,500 species and forms of trees and shrubs. The figure covers both groups and conveys the breadth of the collection. At the ā€œBotaniaā€ centre, visitors can explore six themed exhibitions covering more than 100 topics related to the plant world. Advance registration is required for a visit, so you can take this into account early when planning.

The educational tree walk is about 6.3 kilometres long and takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. An activity game and engaging information about the city’s large and notable trees give the route a thematic focus. The Knuts Skujenieks poetry walk offers a different experience: it is about 7 kilometres long, leads to eight stops in the city of Salaspils, and shares information about the poet through signs with QR codes. You can also listen to excerpts from his poetry at the stops. One stop is the RÄ«gavas MÅ«zikas un mākslas dārzs, where there is an artistically designed wall dedicated to Knuts Skujenieks. Check locally before planning to see whether the poetry walk is currently available.

The paths on Zirņu Island are suitable for leisurely bike rides, walks and picnics. There is a rest area by the cycle path with a bench, a bicycle rack and a waste bin. The options described are clearly distinct: the tree walk combines a route with educational content, the poetry walk features literary stops and QR offerings, while Zirņu Island is mentioned as a place for several peaceful leisure activities.

The Daugava and the Surrounding Region

The Salaspils municipal bathing area is located on the right bank of the Daugava, next to the embankment of the Rīga HES reservoir.

The wider surrounding area includes Dole Island Nature Park, a nature reserve of European importance with specially protected habitats. Visitors can go birdwatching, walking and cycling there. Dole Island is also home to a dolomite outcrop 3 to 4 metres high, which is designated as a protected national natural monument site.

The Daugava Museum is located on Dole Island in Salaspils Municipality, not in the city itself. It offers guided excursions with visitor transport beyond the museum grounds. This makes it possible to distinguish a museum visit from the attractions described in the surrounding area without equating the island with the city.
