A clock monument in Konrādu Square, a highly visible water tower and leisure activities ranging from BMX to wakeboarding show different sides of Mārupe. Cultural history, technology and active pursuits each give a trip a distinct focus.

Local history and notable places

Konrādu Square opened in September 2012 as Mārupe’s first public square. A clock monument was unveiled there in 2015; its pedestal displays facts about the district’s history. Paved paths, seating, a children’s playground, lighting and free public Wi-Fi are among the square’s amenities.

Today’s Mārupe Cultural Centre was formerly the Aizsargu nams. Its foundation stone was laid in September 1936; the building was constructed as a home for the Aizsargi organisation. The Tourism and Crafts House at 10 Bebru Street offers a different kind of visitor experience: it opened in 2022 to promote tourism in the district and introduce visitors to artisans and home producers.

Culture and history nearby

Nearby, the Rīgas Aviācijas muzejs has 47 exhibits, including rare or unique military aircraft and helicopters. The exhibition covers aviation, space technology and air traffic control equipment. It features both specific aircraft exhibits and broader technical themes.

Also nearby, Švarcenieku Manor was built in 1826 as the summer residence of the landowner Švarcs and was used for hunting and recreation. In 2016, it was granted the status of a locally significant architectural monument. The park by the manor has paths, rest areas, benches, bicycle stands, an information board and lighting. The building’s history and the park’s amenities offer two different reasons to visit.

Leisure activities and things to do

Mārupe’s BMX Sports Park has a BMX track with a four-metre-high start hill and various banked turns; bikes and helmets are available to rent. Nearby, Tīraines staļļi offers riding lessons. Its equestrian facilities include paddocks, pastures, a training ground and an indoor arena. You can choose between a ride on the BMX track and an activity centred on equestrian sports.

The nearby JIP Mārupīte leisure centre offers swimming, beach volleyball, football and wakeboarding. A different kind of activity is available in the town of Mārupe: the “Purnavu muiža” hunting centre has the only enclosed 100-metre shooting range in the Baltics. The centre also offers a hunting simulator and hunting courses; participants can obtain a hunting licence as part of the courses.

Getting around and practical information

The Mārupīte River runs through the Mārupe area. The water tower on Mārupītes gatve near Beržu iela is highly visible and often serves as a landmark for finding your way around. The “Medema purvs – soli pa solim” audio guide covers about 2.3 kilometres one way, or 4.6 kilometres for a round trip.

The Tīraine ice-skating and roller-skating track is described as accessible to all residents free of charge year-round, in both summer and winter. Check its operating status before travelling. Lapiņmuiža is private property; check whether access is possible before planning a visit.

In the centre of Mārupe, at 27 Daugavas Street, Meraki Bake House offers brownies, desserts, cakes and macarons.
