The Līvāni Glass Museum is the only museum of its kind in the Baltics. Alongside the history of the glass factory, which is presented there from 1887 onwards, this brings a clearly defined theme into focus during a stay: glassmaking and its products.

Glass history and products

The museum presents the history of the Līvāni glass factory from 1887 onwards. Several thousand glass products made at the factory are also on display. This offers both a historical perspective on the factory and a close look at specific products from its production. If you are planning your visit around a particular theme, you can focus on the history, the glass objects, or both.

Experience glassmaking

At the glassblowing workshop, visitors can watch hot glass products being made. If you plan to take a look, check the visitor arrangements before you travel. The workshops offer a different focus: at “Touch the Glass,” participants make their own glass design object. The Tiffany glass workshop helps them create their own stained-glass window using the Tiffany technique. Both workshops require arrangements in advance.

The activities therefore offer a clear choice: you can watch the production process or take part in creative work yourself. Creating your own design is part of the workshops, while watching is the focus at the glassblowing workshop. This distinction can help you choose the right focus for your stay.

Cultural themes beyond glass

The Old Believer community in Līvāni has existed since the beginning of the 20th century. The “Dubna” applied folk art studio preserves old weaving traditions and develops them further. These themes offer different ways to explore local culture: the history of a community and a craft whose tradition is being continued.

The exhibition house organizes free art exhibitions that are open to everyone; advance registration is required to visit. The Līvāni Liberation Monument also offers a specific historical point of reference: it was restored and reopened on 2 December 2004. Art exhibitions, weaving traditions and historical points of reference can therefore be considered as separate focuses alongside the history of glass.

Upe Swimming Pool as another option

The “Upe” swimming pool has a sports pool, a children's pool and a spa area. So, alongside the cultural activities, there is also an option that combines swimming and spa facilities. If you would rather plan some swimming or time in the spa area during part of your stay, this facility is an alternative to museums, workshops or art exhibitions.

The ferry as a regional connection

The ferry is located at the end of Zemgale Street and connects the two banks of the Daugava. It offers the most direct connection from Latgale to Sēlija and Zemgale. This makes it a separate consideration in your regional planning, alongside cultural and leisure activities. As seasonal or operational conditions may vary, check the timetable before travelling.

Choose hotels based on the focus of your stay

When looking for a hotel in Līvāni, it can help to first decide what you want to focus on: glass history and production, creating something of your own in a workshop, other cultural activities, or the swimming pool. Then compare the location and current availability of the specific accommodation with the activities you want to plan.
