Veldze combines a winding river landscape with traces of cultural history. The Veldze River makes wide loops through the Veldze Depression; the school, historic manor estate, and open-air church reveal different aspects of the place. Nearby, a waterfall, the Riežupe Sand Caves, and a pedestrian and cycle bridge help visitors find their way around. The sites also differ in their visiting conditions: the caves are intended to be visited with a guide, and access arrangements for the waterfall should be checked in advance.
River and Landscape Around Veldze
The landscape of the Veldze Depression is a rolling glacial-lacustrine plain. This technical term combines the influences of glaciers and bodies of water; the depression itself is characterized by its rolling terrain. As the Veldze River flows through the depression, it forms wide loops, and its lower course is highly meandering. Two distinct features therefore describe the river’s course: its broad bends through the depression and its pronounced meanders in the lower course.
Veldze is one of the largest settlements on the banks of the Veldze River. The river is a left-bank tributary of the Riežupe and flows through the parishes of Kabile and Rumba in Kuldīga Municipality. The P120 and P121 roads also cross the Veldze River. These geographic relationships help place the settlement within the river basin without conflating the settlement with the waterway.
Waterfall and Nearby Sights
The Veldze Waterfall is 0.8 to 0.9 meters high and 11 to 16 meters wide. Seasonal water conditions can affect its appearance. It is on the Veldze River, about 400 meters before it flows into the Riežupe and around 400 meters downstream from the P120 road. In Rumbenieki, the former name of Veldze in Rumba Parish, the waterfall is about 140 meters south of an old lime kiln.
Visitor information from 2024 states that both riverbanks are privately owned and that no public access has been established. Check access arrangements before making plans. This distinguishes the waterfall’s location from the question of whether a visit is possible.
Nearby, a pedestrian and cycle bridge crosses the Riežupe. It is 42 meters long and 2.5 meters wide. Next to the bridge is a recreation area managed by the Latvian State Forests, with a shelter, table, benches, and fire pit. The bridge and recreation area are separate landmarks, and the measurements given provide a precise sense of the bridge’s size.
Routes of Different Lengths
The “Pa Riežupes apkārtni” route offers a short loop of 18 kilometers and a long loop of 23 kilometers. The five-kilometer difference provides a concrete basis for choosing a route length. The route passes through the “Ventas ieleja” nature reserve and the “Riežupe” nature park. The two distances refer to this route; they should not be understood as separate details about other paths.
School, Manor, and Open-Air Church
The Old School of Veldze is of local cultural and historical significance. Veldze’s four-grade primary school was founded in 1878 as an Orthodox parish auxiliary school. A Mazpulks youth organization was established at the school in 1930. The historic Veldze manor estate, or Veldzes pusmuiža in Latvian, was known as “Gut Welsen.”
The “Bethel” open-air church offers another form of cultural life: in summer, it holds baptisms, weddings, church services, and special ceremonies outdoors. The school, historic manor estate, and open-air church thus represent different themes—education, a historic place name, and summer ceremonies.
Riežupe Sand Caves: Length and Visits
The Riežupe Sand Caves are nearby. Their cave labyrinth was dug by hand over three generations and is two kilometers long in total; 460 meters of it can be visited. It is the longest cave labyrinth in Latvia. Visits are intended to be accompanied by a guide, and April to October is listed as the visiting period. Check whether visits are being offered before making plans.
