Rāmuļi is best explored through its school and cultural history. The history of Rāmuļu pamatskola is traced back to 1864. The school and community house was built together in 1872 on land belonging to Vanadziņi and inaugurated on 6 December 1873. The dates mark different milestones: the school’s history goes back to 1864, the house was built in 1872 and inaugurated in 1873. For travellers who want to get to know a place through its history, this provides a clear chronological thread.

School History and Building Phases

The historic school building was a wooden structure with two classrooms, a dining room, two bedrooms, a kitchen and three rooms for teachers. Antons Veidens led Rāmuļu School from 1873 to 1893. He also founded and led a choir in Rāmuļi, so education and choral singing belong to different chapters of the local history.

In the 1930s, a second storey was added to the school building. In 1958, a new building was constructed for Rāmuļu School, while a boarding school was set up in the older building. This makes it possible to distinguish between two phases of development: first the extension of the older house, and later the new building and the change in use of the former building. Anyone interested in the school’s history can see these steps as changes over time, rather than combining them into a single building phase.

Windmills and Commemorative Event

The Rāmuļi windmills also offer a glimpse into local technological history. They ceased operating in 1927. One specific detail concerns the mechanism for turning the mill cap: all the gears were made of wood, not iron. Alongside when operations ended, a particular construction method is therefore also in focus. This offers a different historical perspective from the school’s history—especially for travellers interested in earlier technology and how it worked.

Another cultural reference is Dziesmu diena Rāmuļos, a commemorative event for conductor Daumants Gailis. It takes place every five years. If the event is a key factor in your trip, check the date and the specific edition before making plans. This lets you consider it as a possible reason to travel without assuming it is an annual event.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation

For road directions, V 294 is a useful reference: it is designated as a state secondary road, class II, with the route name Cēsis–Rāmuļi–Bānūži. Check the current route and road conditions before setting off. A road designation can help with orientation; conditions on the day of travel are also important when planning your journey.

At Kārkliņi campsite, up to 15 guests can stay with their own tents. The site has a shared bathing area with a jetty; various watercraft are also available for hire. If you plan to stay there or make use of the water activities, check capacity and current conditions in advance for your travel dates. Information about capacity, facilities and rentals may change. This will help you decide whether camping with your own tent suits your plans.
