The Talas Region brings together archaeological cultural landscapes and alpine nature as two distinct travel highlights. At Manas Ordo, archaeological remains and rituals surrounding the Manas epic take center stage; in the Besh-Tash Valley, a river gorge, alpine meadows, and a 15 km trail define the nature experience. The region’s appeal thus ranges from cultural and historical themes to mountain landscapes—two different starting points for planning your trip.

Manas Ordo and Kenkol: Cultural History Across Several Periods

The cultural landscape of Manas Ordo lies in the upper Talas Valley, on the right bank of the Kenkol River, a tributary of the Talas, and at the entrance to the Kenkol Gorge. A mausoleum dating from the 14th century is traditionally associated by the Kyrgyz people with the epic hero Manas. The cultural landscape also includes rituals and ceremonies connected with the initiation of manaschi, the storytellers of the national epic Manas. The mausoleum and the initiation rituals offer two distinct points of interest: the traditional association with Manas and the role of his storytellers.

The Kenkol burial ground is another archaeological landmark. Its kurgans date from the end of the 1st millennium BCE to the first half of the 1st millennium CE and are associated with the Huns. Petroglyphs near the burial ground reflect the economic and ceremonial life of the nomadic population. Unlike the traditions associated with Manas, the focus here is on burial mounds and rock art.

Besh-Tash: Nature Park, River, and Alpine Meadows

Besh-Tash Nature Park lies in the Talas Valley on the central northern slope of the Talas Alatau and covers 32,411 hectares. It was established in 1996 to protect a natural complex and biodiversity in northwestern Kyrgyzstan. More than 800 species of higher plants grow in the nature park. Deer, foxes, martens, snow leopards, eagles, and other rare wild animals live there. Osman fish are found in the Besh-Tash River.

A 15 km trail runs through the Besh-Tash Valley along a river gorge. Below peaks less than 4,000 m high, the trail opens onto alpine meadows. The route description thus leads from the river gorge into meadowland below the peaks. Trail conditions can vary by season.

Pilgrimage Sites and Summer in the High Mountains

The Üch-Kümböz cemetery and the Nyldy-Ata mazar are also designated pilgrimage sites in the Talas Region. These places add further religious associations to the archaeological sites and the cultural landscape connected with the Manas epic.

In summer, the typical alpine vegetation of the highlands in the Talas Region, found at elevations of up to 3,600 m, offers its own seasonal highlight. In sunny and moderately cool weather, beginners can also take part in tourist excursions. Check the weather and local access conditions before planning such an excursion.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation

The Besh-Tash Valley can be reached by road from the city of Talas. The road to Talas crosses the high-altitude Too-Ashuu and Otmok passes. Seasonal road conditions can change; check conditions before you drive. You should also take seasonal conditions into account when planning the trail in the Besh-Tash Valley.

Then consider the location of your specific accommodation in relation to the destinations you want to visit.
