Cholpon-Ata (Tscholponata) is a summer resort on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul. Public beaches, an extensive petroglyph site, museums and activities on the water give visitors a range of ways to spend their time. The attractions are not all in the same place: if you want to combine the beach, culture and activities on the lake, take the routes and conditions at each location into account when planning.

Beaches and routes around town

The public beaches are on the northeastern side of the Cholpon-Ata peninsula. From the town center, you can reach the peninsula’s beaches on foot via Chekirova Street and Presidential Park. This route provides a specific starting point for planning a beach visit; how much time you set aside for other destinations is up to you.

Petroglyphs and museums

The open-air petroglyph museum is about 3.5 kilometers north of the main museum, in a residential and agricultural area of Cholpon-Ata. The stone site covers around 42 hectares. Its location and size are both important for orientation: this is a sprawling attraction within the town, not a single carving by the roadside. Check the practical access conditions on site. A 2022 field assessment notes that a guide who takes visitors to notable rock carvings is generally available. It is best to ask before your visit whether this service is currently offered.

The Issyk-Kul State Historical and Cultural Museum Reserve in Cholpon-Ata includes a main exhibition and themed halls featuring historical, archaeological and nomadic household items. Rukh Ordo is an open-air museum on the shore of Issyk-Kul in Cholpon-Ata. It contains ten mini-museums and five chapels representing Islam, Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Buddhism and Judaism. While the museum reserve’s exhibitions cover historical and archaeological subjects as well as nomadic everyday life, Rukh Ordo also focuses on religious traditions. Rukh Ordo’s concert hall serves as a venue for festivals, competitions and concerts.

Lake trips and summer events

The Cruise Yacht Club is in a secluded bay on the southwestern outskirts of the town. Lake trips are offered on a converted fishing vessel, a speedboat or an internationally classed sailing yacht. The activities also include underwater excursions, fishing and diving. There are several types of water activities to choose from: trips on different kinds of boats as well as other activities on and under the water.

Horse races and music concerts take place at the Cholpon-Ata Hippodrome in summer. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates in advance; the program is seasonal. Your meal choices can also be part of your daily plans: restaurants in Cholpon-Ata serve Russian, Chinese—including Dungan—and Central Asian cuisine. This lets you consider cultural visits, time by the lake and meals as different parts of your stay, without setting them out as a fixed itinerary.
